The most important thing with contract work, not only for teaching but any field, is to first not be in the wrong institution ie a small institute. Aim big and go big and then follow those rules and second dont waste time trying to reach out and connect and dont feel shy.

Having side gigs or temporary work has definitely broadened my network, which is not only great professionally but also personally, because it has helped me create a village for myself and my family. And this broadened network has also allowed me to connect current and former students to potential employers, supervisors and also to education opportunities (often times for free). While the extra money gained from side work is not only a plus but a MUST, the greatest gain, in my view, is the ability to take advantage of my network to benefit students, young people and families, so that they too can reap the benefits of the resources that I was privileged enough to access

In my experience, contract work has often helped me build skills in other areas that my full-time job did not include or expand to. For example, as a program manager for DEI at a school of social work, my main role was to support the planning, drafting, and implementation of a DEI strategic plan for the school, as well as to supervise the growth and development of 4 social work interns. My contract work as a parent educator and as a college access coach allowed to build my skillset in two different areas of facilitation: Mental Health Education, and College Planning and Counseling. Both which made me an even better program manager. Balancing the jobs was touch, but these experiences allowed me to extend my impact outside of the academy.

To my great luck and fortune, all of my current and past side gigs have aligned with my longterm professional and personal goals. I want to one day work as a university professor, in order to teach and prepare the social workers and educators of tomorrow. Therefore, working in educational research, college counseling and community organizing has been necessary for me to stay connected to the communities that raised me, and to stay abreast of the current challenges and realities faced by students coming from underrepresented and marginalized communities. Moreover, working for leaders in the fields of college access and research also affords the possibility of turning a temporary role into a full-time position, when the time comes.
