How can AR UX design be optimized for the user's cognitive load?

The thing with AR designs is that since the ui is augmented onto the real world we have technically infinite space to work with. And also the traditional way of designing in the 2D space will have to change because you can now consider designing in a 3D space. There is so much scope to present augmented data where even giving the user freedom to move around the ui in the 3D space is something designers will have to consider.

I agree with this. If anyone can use the AR app without any help , it means AR UX was defined well. Every component of UX should be placed with purposes. The end user will not be aware about the use of the application . Suppose if you are placing the OK button then it will come on the left side or right side ? All the steps , call to action should be designed properly.

Cognitive load is one of the many facets of an experience designers need to consider. A high cognitive load is usually viewed as a bad thing, something that negatively impacts a users experience with a particular product and needs to be designed out. Cognitive load isn't static either, users will experience different levels and types of cognitive load at different points during their experience. AR has a naturally high cognitive load because of it's complex nature. Just to list a few: it's experienced in four dimensions, uses multiple simultaneous methods of input, uses spatial awareness, and forces users to mentally rectify the digital and real worlds. That's a lot, especially for new users who need to overcome a high learning curve.

To make AR easy for users, keep things simple on the screen, use clear visuals, and make it easy to interact with gestures. Show information gradually, give feedback that makes sense, and avoid using too much text. Use sounds that match the surroundings, let users personalize their experience, and help them if something goes wrong. Regularly test with users and improve based on their feedback. A simple and friendly introduction to AR will make it more enjoyable for everyone.

By defining the goal and context of the AR application, the designer can optimize the AR UX design for the user’s cognitive load, and create a more effective and engaging AR experience for the user.

Simplifying the content and interface is the next essential step. In AR design, less is often more. Streamline the user interface by eliminating unnecessary elements and distractions, ensuring that the user's attention is directed towards relevant information and actions. It's like seamlessly blending the AR content with the real world so it doesn't throw users off or make them scratch their heads. But we also get to spice things up a bit by using virtual perks like personalization, gamification, and storytelling to keep users engaged and excited. This mix ensures a smoother ride as users switch back and forth between the real and digital worlds in AR.

When designing an AR application, it is of extreme importance to prioritize the safety of the user while taking into account the environments in which the application will be used. This necessitates a design approach that evaluates and mitigates potential risks, ensuring that the virtual elements of the application do not compromise the safety of the users. It is crucial to integrate features that keep the user aware of their real-world surroundings, preventing any hazardous distractions. In my experience, very few AR interactions utilize the power of storytelling. While not all interactions benefit from extensive storytelling, it is still important to add some elements of storytelling that align with the user journey.

Virtual elements should respond seamlessly to users' visual focus, enhancing the sense of realism and reducing cognitive effort. 2. Integrate eye tracking with depth-sensing technologies. Adjust the virtual elements' depth perception based on users' gaze, allowing them to perceive the virtual content in a way that aligns with their real-world surroundings. 3. Implement a mechanism that detects shifts in users' gaze between the physical environment and virtual content. Adjust the responsiveness of eye tracking to create a seamless transition, minimizing disruptions and cognitive load during context switching.

Using adaptive techniques like machine learning, sensors, and analytics allows the AR application to personalize content based on user behavior and preferences. This personalization can significantly improve the overall user experience by delivering content that is more relevant and valuable to each individual.

Indeed, holding a device up high for an extended period of time is not natural and extremely exhausting. So you might want to have many short AR interactions unfold through a meaningful storytelling rather than one random long-ish activation that might leave a shallower impact on your audience.

Shorter completion times may suggest efficient information processing, while prolonged times may indicate increased cognitive effort. - Example: Measure the time it takes for users to locate and interact with specific virtual objects within the AR environment. More often than not, end users will use the AR experience differently than the developer has intended. It is a good practice to test with real users in early stages of development and make agile adjustments to UI / UX accordingly. If this is neglected and testing is only done when the AR experience is near finished, there is so much that can go wrong or unnoticed.

AR and XR is moving forward FAST. Keep your eyes and ears open, see what friends, colleagues and competitors are doing, go to events, talk to people to stay informed :)

A great way to keep up, learn and improve is to learn from others and stay in contact with others projects and test individual demos, as well as provide constructive feedback to one another other.

UX in AR can be optimized by integrating multiple ways of interaction methods into experiences. These may include voice commands, hand tracking, gaze tracking, and more, providing users with a range of options. Allowing users the flexibility to choose their preferred interaction method based on personal preferences or specific situations can significantly contribute to reducing cognitive load.

Is this experience clearly enhanced by or only possible through the AR modality? If not, you might want to reevaluate why you're using AR. If yes, then why create 2D interfaces everywhere? Especially for HMD-based AR, why not use the space, controllers, head and eye tracking to make the UX and UI spatial and memorable to interact with? We literally add a new dimension to work with in AR and what do we tend to do? Throw up a bunch of 2D elements in 3D space. Play to the technology's strengths!

UX tools like Figma, and Adobe XD still have limitations in AR/VR/XR design and we are hopefully waiting for improvement in these tools.

Think outside the box. Some of the best feedback I have received for UI was on small throwaway projects where I explored non-standard approaches!

While XR applications may offer new human-machine interactivity, it is important to remember that they have been trained in point-and-click during more than 30 years. Awesome gesture based interactions may seem cool but they not fit every app. Using floating 2D panels will add to your application a simple and well-known interaction that will give users some rest while adapting to these new technologies.
