How can consultants enhance their project management skills?

1. Build in contingencies. A plan should not be overly optimistic. Contingencies are there to account for the unknown, so it's very difficult to know what the contingency is for. It's there when/if something unexpected pops up, and it's key to share that with the client for transparency. 2. Think about the full impact of a risk/delay. When something unexpected happens, it's easy to immediately raise a red flag. However that may lead to unnecessary panic, so take a few minutes to think out loud about what the full impact of the issue is, and whether it's necessary to turn your status red. A great project manager identifies that some risks are manageable, and presents a mitigation measure at the same time they're raising the risk.

Great to build a plan, definitely do this. But don't make the mistake to think your plan is how things will happen. So Continuously monitor and refine. One key thing that misses from the components of the plan here on the left: dependencies. Your project will not be 100% in your control. There is other people, departments, companies you have to work with. List the dependencies and accompanied stakeholders that have to execute those actions, try engage as many related stakeholders as possible before starting your project and understand their timelines, ways of working. In my experience, the largest contributor to delayed or failed projects is delays due to waiting time for actions outside your project team's control

Learn to identify and manage project risks effectively. There is no shortcut to it, at least I am not aware of any. This usually comes with experience. However, you can develop strategies to mitigate potential issues before they escalate, by learning from your mentors in the company. Having a mentor is a blessing in disguise! Projects can evolve, so cultivate adaptability to respond to changing circumstances and ensure successful project outcomes.

Preparation, preparation, preparation. Having a framework for the project that's still flexible enough to accommodate issues that crop up will help a consultant manage the scope and deliver as appropriate. Newer consultants especially (though this is true for all consultants) can benefit from having other consultants provide feedback on the plan. Incorporating relevant feedback will make the plan stronger. If the other consultants are on the same team, so much the better, because they'll have stronger buy-in and more of an incentive to make the project successful.

Communication is most important skill special for consultants. If you are good communicator you will be able to solve most of the challenges and build solid relationship with clients and colleagues.

I would always put communication first, then planning, time management, and collaboration. While the project planning should be solid, the project will fall apart if you're not a good communicator.

A key framework here is the powermap (google: communication power map). Understand who has power to influence your project and how involved these people are in your project (+ positive or negative). Based on this equation you can decide your communication strategy per group of people. Some you have to inform, other's you have to consult, other's you need to actively manage through the change etc. The powermap frameworks vary a bit but the key is to understand that different people require different communication at different time.

Knowing what to supply to whom, meaning that not only your client is given the right information but all stakeholders. Project team members receiving effective communications is equally as important as the client needs. It also develops an open project culture which helps promote trust.

To practice effective communicator you should: - Build relationships with regular scheduled meetings - Keep meetings engaging/interactive with. storytelling - Understand project goals to have relevant conversations - Translate business terms to correlate with the project/department you're working with - Use data relevant to your audience - Be equally skilled at listening, understanding, and empathizing.

Personal experience has shown me that skepticism and resistance are a harsh reality. Not everyone within a client organization will support your presence or want you to succeed. Some may even have hidden agendas or actively work against you. It's crucial to acknowledge this upfront and approach the situation with honesty. Identify the skeptics and assess their motivations. Build relationships strategically, focusing on delivering tangible value to win over even the most resistant individuals. Maintain professionalism and integrity at all times. If the situation becomes toxic or compromises the client's best interests, just walk away. Success in consulting often means confronting uncomfortable truths and adapting your approach accordingly.
