If I will talk particularly about industrial applications, In my experience, We had used drone for accessing a flame profile in flare stacks , Inspection of high rise structures etc. We can use them , where we don’t want to spend money for unnecessary scaffolds , Speed job execution, hazardous places , where isolation is difficult.

From experience there will always be pros and cons for emerging technology however the reliability is the foundations to make this effective, this includes; Application of the drone (will it work) What do you know before to rely on it? What happens if the footage / recording doesn’t reveal what you had expected? What other factors to consider (competence of operator / specification of drone / weather / constrictions etc) Can this be done another way? What happens if there is a failure? Therefore a logical approach to using drone technology should be documented along with risk assessment to demonstrate effective measures have been considered prior to use.

Drone technologies present many benefits such as eliminating exposure to working at height or in confined spaces, cost reduction on access provision, less operational impact/downtime, various improved data collects, accuracy/mirroring of repeat inspections. However, as inspectors we must always ask, is the use of such technology able to complete the inspection fully or should it be used as a supplementary tool alongside conventional examination.
