How can electric vehicles be used in public transportation?

The complete life cycle of vehicles is essential in assessing transport sustainability. Factors such as fuel efficiency, manufacturing and energy sources influence vehicle environmental impact. Electric vehicles (EVs), powered by renewable energy, typically have lower carbon footprints than traditional internal combustion engines. Battery manufacturing carries environmental implications, the emissions during EV operation, especially with renewable energy sources like solar or wind power, often offset this initial footprint. With a 15-year life cycle in focus, EVs powered by renewables emerges as the most sustainable choice. Advancements in battery technology and recycling enhance EV sustainability will solidify eco-conscious transportation.

Os veículos elétricos são uma solução sustentável para os desafios do transporte público em grandes cidades, trazendo benefícios ambientais, econômicos e sociais. No entanto, a falta de infraestrutura de recarga é uma dificuldade crucial. Uma solução para essa dificuldade é a implementação de um plano abrangente de infraestrutura de recarga, envolvendo parcerias entre o governo, empresas de energia e operadores de transporte público.

Apart from direct impact in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, electric vehicles in public transport can help alleviate traffic congestion by reducing the number of individual vehicles on the road. This, in turn, can contribute to smoother traffic flow, shorter travel times, and reduced overall congestion-related emissions.

One item I believe is of paramount benefit is overcoming the perception of EVs in public transit as a novelty and more as a norm. The energy placed within the vehicle is often inconsequential in comparison to consumer demand for convenience. While there are many positive values to EVs, and we can speculate on congestion reductions, the majority of American consumers will still hop in their SOVs and head to the pump. The greatest benefit EVs can provide in public transit right now can be addressing the symptoms of SOV use by partnering with gov’t agencies and/or private firms to promote enabling legislation for supportive and more convenient public transit infrastructure.

In addition to reducing greenhouse gases and thus air pollution, EVs will also reduce noise pollution as they are quieter compared to diesel and petrol vehicles.

Desde mi punto de vista el principal desafio está en el metodo de carga adoptar. - ¿Solo en el deposito? - ¿En distintas puntas de linea de transporte publico? - ¿Mediante catenarias? - ¿O una combinacion de ellas? Ya que eso, me definirá el tamaño de baterías ideal para mi flota de buses, aunque también se puede ver a la inversa: El tamaño de batería me ayuda a definir el método de carga mas adecuado.

Charging cycles, inflexibility in routes and change of schedules frequently (for eg a deployment scenario considering peak hours on business hubs vs. city shopping centers may not be as easy as reprogramming a bus number and route on any day) depending on the technology deployed (fast charging, ultra fast or swapping).

Na minha experiência com testes e contratação de veículos elétricos, dos vários desafios, quero citar um que é pouco discutido: Compreender quais linhas são passíveis de serem substituídas no sistema. Quando se fala em mudar a frota para elétrica e o estudo apresenta que várias linhas não são possíveis, por n motivos, é normal os gestores desistirem do processo. Entretanto, a tecnologia está em evolução, portanto, substituir as linhas que hoje já conseguem é importante. Pois já se inicia o processo de instalação dos sistemas de carregamento e adaptação das garagens para esse novo tipo de veículo.

Os desafios enfrentados pelos veículos elétricos no transporte público são inúmeros e impactam diretamente no custo e na satisfação dos passageiros. A necessidade de infraestrutura adequada para a recarga dos veículos, bem como a limitação da autonomia das baterias, são fatores que elevam os custos operacionais e, consequentemente, o valor das tarifas. Além disso, a preocupação com a comodidade e a segurança dos passageiros também se faz presente, uma vez que a tecnologia ainda está em constante evolução. Diante desses desafios, é fundamental buscar soluções inovadoras e sustentáveis para garantir a eficiência e a viabilidade dos veículos elétricos no transporte público.

First and foremost, to get the most benefit from electric buses and from any rail based systems, you need to be starting from a reasonably high baseline to begin with. There's little to be gained from having a poor market share to begin with and converting a diesel fleet to all-electric. This folly is compounded by removing bus lanes before you switch to electric buses. Yes, we need electric buses, but they need protected running routes first. Far better to build market share with BRT, or by dedicating to LRT to begin with, and then for these established BRT networks to switch to battery electric, than it is to have headline grabbing electric bus fleets with sub 10% mode share.

Let's not forget the power of e-bikes too! EVs can play a crucial role in public transportation, offering several benefits for both urban environments and the overall sustainability of transportation systems. However, e-bikes in public transportation adds another layer of flexibility and advantages, heres why: Reduced Congestion: EV's can still cause the age old problem of congestion. E-bikes can help alleviate traffic congestion by offering an alternative mode of transportation that is faster in dense urban areas, especially during peak hours. Last-Mile Connectivity: E-bikes provide an excellent solution for the "last mile" problem, helping commuters bridge the gap between public transportation stops and their final destinations.

Part 2. Second and most important point is the localization of chemical pollution makes it unattractive. Using diesel fuel does creat a global environmental agenda in the long run. Whereas the use of EVs with battery creates local environmental agenda. It shifts the CO2 global agenda to battery chemicals local pollutant agenda. Drawing from my involvement and position in the deployment and execution of India's first electric bus project, I have gleaned several critical insights: 1. Effective route planning is paramount. 2. The planning of depots and charging stations is crucial. 3. Scheduling must accommodate timings for opportunity charging. 4. Maintenance facilities need to be properly equipped for the repair and maintenance of electric buses. For other modes like eTaxis etc i think charging station locations to cover entire city properly shall be critical.

I can remember when I was working for Charlotte Uptown Development Corporation (Charlotte Center City Partners), and we were making the needed assessment for shuttle services in the uptown Charlotte area for the first time. This was years ago before electric vehicles had really ever been used or were on ‘the scene’. We chose the initial option then because of fuel efficiency issues and true power efficiency trials, and a partnership at the time with electric providers from Tennessee and an interest locally with then-Duke Power. It was a successful choice to service a small route in the uptown area, to try alternative energy sources and test both market and supply options. That was truly almost 30 years ago, way ahead of many EV choices.
