How can empathy help you develop a compelling vision?

A vision captures the soul of an organisation, boiled down to the very essence of it all. When this statement is composed well, it is easily understood and repeated forward on both context and emotional level - regardless of who experiences or expresses it. But for a vision to really punch through, the message itself needs to be morally, emotionally and logically sound to the target audience. Only then can it be called great with credence. Internalising a great vision at all stakeholder levels acts as an organisational true north reboot. It guides, bridges, commits and enables. That is where its beauty lies.

Crafting a compelling vision transcends mere objectives; it's about painting a captivating future narrative that resonates with the team or organization. It's a story reflecting our essence, values, and aspirations answering the core questions of our existence, purpose, and impact. Empathy plays a crucial role here. Understanding people's emotions, needs, and perspectives enables a vision that genuinely connects, inspiring collective commitment and action toward a shared, meaningful destination.

A compelling vision is a story that captures the whole organization's imagination in what can be. It not only explains why want to move towards that future, but how we all can contribute and shape this new tomorrow.

As an inventor for me compelling visions of seeing people coping with horrible life circumstances that could be avoided. People around the world cope with incredible pain and suffering from scoliosis. If I can envision a simple solution to avoid that suffering, that vision becomes greater than the commercial success of a product or brand. I have been fortunate to be able to use income from commercial success to fund and support such visions. I recently developed the Camera Ray, which without X rays can generate a virtual X ray from a smartphone and be used for screening of millions of children in poor area and third world areas. Combined by the power of 3 D printing many painful afflictions that would otherwise play out in their futures.

Because it is not just about you or the top leadership it is about everyone we want to take on this journey towards the future. And we need empathy to understand other people, and only then can we frame the vision with an element of "what is in there for them", so everyone understands why they should care about this vision.

Empathy leads to higher emotional intelligence and the ability to understand your audiences, stakeholders, partners, etc. Crafting a vision should be based on finding out what matters most to those who are impacted by the vision and the implementation of that vision. You will want to gain perspective from a diverse set of individuals to avoid blind spots, but you also have to be willing to say "I don't know" to questions. People will relate to you and your vision more when you display high levels of empathy and authenticity.

Using your tools to research and create data points, personas, etc. to define your audience is a great start. But, take it a bit further and be more authentic about the approach to develop the vision. Some visions are broad and need to be by the nature of the product or company. “To make the best products on earth and to leave the world better than we found it. “ but for the person to feel understood and to be truly empathetic, you have to take that further and develop visions that resonate with each individual. If you are very niche in your solution or product then this process is easier to define and the vision is more authentic. If you have multiple products then the vision needs to be re-created at the solution/product level

For example, if you were part of a company culture that did not foster belonging, you could make a goal of creating an organization that does. If you had a poor manager, you know how it feels to be treated negatively, and you can use your background to promote a better future for yourself and the world at large. Adding this step to the other steps listed here will help you leverage empathy to develop a compelling vision.

If the vision was created with empathy and around understanding the feelings of everyone your solution targets then the whole company becomes aligned from the top down. Sales understands the value of each person they are speaking too, marketing understands the unique struggles of each of the personas and why they feel this way, customer support is already aware of the conversations they may be having and is empathetic to the challenges, in general, the whole company is more aligned with the "why" for each person and every time they interact with someone at the company they will "feel" it. They may not be able to say why but they will feel heard.
