How can energy storage create value and revenue streams for renewable energy producers and consumers?

Renewable energy resources are intermittent. A wind farm producing at full capacity comes to a full stop in minutes if the wind dies. It takes a patch of clouds to reduce the production of a solar farm in mid-day. Storage will help keep the lights on when the resource is scarce while providing the owner/operator a premium profit if they have enough storage to supply the demand to the grid. Having sufficient supply in the grid will help keep electricity prices reasonable in favour of the consumers. With a rooftop solar and wall battery system, consumers become prosumers (producer and consumer) and can sell excess power to the grid and offset their residential energy bill.

The benefits are many and vary, but one of them is not being spoken about enough. Sometimes, renewable energy producers are asked to curtail energy production when the grid is unable to handle excess generation, especially during periods of low demand. Storage can prevent such phenomenon by capturing excess energy and storing it, ensuring it can be used or sold later, thus increasing revenue potential.

In my experience and from the grid perspective, Energy storage is the pathway to sustainable grids through integration of more renewable energy and by extension reduction of grid related emissions. Energy storage offers reliability through frequency and voltage regulation as well as peak shaving. Due to the ability to respond quickly to grid challenges as they arise, energy storage can help reduce power interruptions as well as enable quick restoration especially from a black-start point. In Kenya where steam venting from geothermal energy curtailment is a big challenge, energy storage will ensure this valuable resource is not wasted.

Energy storage is vital for a renewable-powered energy future. They offer numerous benefits such as it bridges the gap between intermittent renewable energy generation and stable energy demand in terms of energy supply and grid reliability. Moreover, batteries have gained considerable ground as they power many of the technologies that will enable the transition towards net zero. Energy storage system acts as a backup devices in off-grid/standalone systems to overcome the intermittent nature of renewable energy system, ensuring the continuity of supply in excess or deficit of power by charging and discharging, for reliable and smooth operation. They play active role in wide spread adoption of renewable energy systems & electric vehicles.

Knowing and understanding these regulations is essential to optimizing performance and ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

Little publicized information about energy storage is that certain types of batteries have the ability to be recharged using energy from reverse chemical reactions that replicate natural processes, such as photosynthesis. This approach allows the creation of a biological energy storage method, expanding the possibilities in the field of sustainable technologies. Research into energy storage systems that rely on photosynthesis and other natural phenomena could result in substantial progress in storage technologies that are both sustainable and efficient.

Exploring different energy storage technologies has been a fascinating part of my work. Lithium-ion batteries are a standout due to their efficiency and declining costs, making them a popular choice for many applications. However, during a recent project, we delved into alternative solutions like flow batteries and pumped hydro storage. Flow batteries, with their potential for scalability and long-duration storage, offered a compelling alternative for specific use cases. Meanwhile, pumped hydro, despite its large footprint, presented an effective solution for mass energy storage. Emerging technologies, such as solid-state batteries and hydrogen storage, hold promise for the future, potentially offering higher energy density and efficiency.

Each energy storage technology offers unique benefits and challenges, making the choice of the appropriate technology dependent on specific application needs, cost, and performance requirements. Carefully evaluating these factors will help select the most appropriate technology for different energy storage contexts and objectives.

BESS dominate the market, however, other promising technologies might play a great role in the future. Energy has very different names. Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES), Gravity Batteries or Heat Batteries are promising technologies, that could potentially disrupt the energy landscape in the foreseeable future.
