Making too much stuff is at the core of the necessity to upcycle. We create too much waste. So being able to re-use an existing garment or material from that garment to create something new is key to reducing the amount of waste the fashion industry contributes to global pollution.

Upcycling can definitely be a challenge for any designer. The design process and how you think about designing and constructing a garment is very different than how you’d normally design a garment. It requires a lot more thought and planning, and the design may be dictated by the garment that’s being upcycled.
