How can pre-tests improve student engagement in e-learning?

Pre-tests in e-learning act as educational trailers, sparking curiosity and priming learners for the main feature. Much like a movie preview, these assessments provide a sneak peek into upcoming content, igniting interest and motivating students. By challenging their existing knowledge, pre-tests create a sense of relevance, making the upcoming material more engaging. It's an interactive prologue that not only sets the stage but also encourages active participation. Leveraging pre-tests in e-learning is akin to offering a tantalizing glimpse, turning a passive audience into eager participants ready to dive into the educational adventure.

Pre-tests offer educators a powerful tool for tailoring instruction to learners' needs. They enable effective placement in groups or classes, while also providing crucial information about individual strengths and areas for growth.

Helps on multiple fronts. 1) learners can treat it like a mock and figure out where they stand. Helps them to learn more if the performance has been subpar 2) The evaluators get a sense of the group and can charter the course of learning based on this feedback 3) The learning too can be customised based on performance. The ones scoring higher can be made to go through higher courses by way of adaptive learning 4) Calms the nerves for the first time assessment takers and gives an insight on what to expect in the final evaluation

Pre-tests allow facilitators/teachers to understand the maturity and acumen of the audience. There is no sense in spending time on 101-level material if your audience already understands the basics.

An example I’ve seen is the pre-skill tests used by Whetten and Cameron in their book on developing management skills: knowing your level in any leadership skill creates a readiness to learn about the skill. It might reveal the extent to which you over/underestimate your skill in the area. It also increased my students’ curiosity about what was coming next once we dove into the discussion about the specific skill.

Many faculty endured "pre-tests" of our own. It needs to be labled as an "assessment" and not a test. There is nothing to fail, but there is everything to learn where one is proficient. This also enables a teacher to "prioritize" where to place those valuable teaching minutes. I would make a funny about where students "messed up" the most. "You all are doing the Comma, comma, comma Cameleon all over the paper, or you are 'fragging' all over this paper. So, to show that they are "not practiced" does not mean "not able". It shows that we have work to do in certain areas. Learning to edit one's own work is probably the best lesson a teacher can pass on. Revealing that we once sat in those seats shows that we were not born teachers.

I think the name “pre-test” or "diagnostic" makes some learners nervous, so I don’t name them. Plus, I have had some learners skip them or do poorly on them if they aren’t graded, so I grade them, but all learners earn a perfect score since I want it to be low-stakes. Often, pre-tests are multiple-choice/multiple-answer meant to let the instructor know the learner’s previous knowledge. For writing classes, my pre-tests are always writing-based and help me check their grammar and mechanics; their style, language, and tone; and their reading comprehension. I can send them resources and provide feedback where they are struggling.

This is a practice that hasn’t been universally adopted. I think some of the issue stems from understanding the format of a pretest. Colleagues have shared the impression that they give students the exact final test at the beginning and if student passes they can skip the content. In the first example the idea of 10 questions dramatically shifts that understanding. You use pre test to identify student knowledge, skills, learning goals but it isn’t a test but an assessment a guide or gauge.

For self-assessment pre-tests, consider using a Likert scale (with set anchored meanings). The advantage of Likert scales is that they allow for degrees of opinion (and no opinion). In addition, it's simple enough for learners to return to the same scale at the end of the course and see how their impressions have changed after taking the course.

Test yourself!'). This creates value and offers a reason for the learner to invest their time and energy into the material.

I aim for a relaxed atmosphere, emphasizing that it's about gauging where we're at and where we can go. I avoid overwhelming students with difficult questions, ensuring they understand it's okay not to know everything. By framing it as a friendly exploration rather than a test, students feel more comfortable engaging with the material. Designing appropriate pre test to check the existing knowledge of the learners helps the instructional designers to build the appropriate instructional strategies so that the new knowledge can be build upon the existing one and can be used meanigfully across various domains. The pre test can be conducted to diagnose the gaps in the foundations of learners knowledge and how those gaps can be bridged and connected to new knowledge. There are various methods that can be incorporated to conduct these pre tests, survey, questionnaires, linkert scale questionnaries, interviews, etc.

Somehow- Per-test concept i as an academician feel makes the learner rote. No additional efforts required. Except few education like medicine requires pre-test! Rest it should be practical, application based test to make learning rich. Examinations overall need to be revamped!
