How can Rhino help you create complex architectural designs?

I've been using Rhino for close to 16 years and it has been my go-to software, along with Photoshop. Rhino's accuracy, extensive toolbox and sculpting capabilities with NURBS & Gimball features makes it an all around champion for designers everywhere to get an idea to a buildable level- fast.

The key benefit of Rhino is its versatility. It uses the same typed command interface as AutoCAD, allowing you to quickly access a tool or function without searching for it, like other software. You can also move from 2d to 3d very quickly, as well as jump into complex scripting development through grasshopper.

I use Rhino to model and create accurate 3D models for the manufacture of pre-fab wood frame elements. Because I often have to deal with inaccurate 2D or 3D models I can easily import correct and create accurate models required for the manufacture of the elements. The reason why I specifically chose Rhino is that it supports advanced surface modeling tools, often lacking in most other CAD packages.

I've always felt that, unlike many other 3D modelling softwares, Rhino is very accessible, especially for students. Rhino can import geometry from a variety of applications, such as SketchUp and 3ds Max. As well as export 2D and 3D Geometry in many different formats (DWG, FBX, etc...). Rhino's Licence is a a single payment that grants permanent use and access to updates (excluding major releases). Furthermore, you can use the full version of the newly released Rhino 8 free for 90 days!

The challenges outlined in the summary are pretty common with all design software. Every designer needs to fully understand their specific needs and process prior to jumping fully into any software. I've also used Maya, Cinema4d, Sketchup and Archicad and Rhino meets my needs way better than anything else I've tried. I'd recommend getting trial versions of all the major software out there and seeing what works best for your design projects. I do wish that Rhino had an animation feature, as well as a way to more easily convert to other programs (like USD).

I'm not an architect, but if I was I'd probably learn Revit for its advanced BIM capabilities. However, in the rapid field of experiential design, Rhino is my recommended platform as you can model up complex designs that are fabrication ready. This is essential for the speed I work and passing designs to fabricators. Its also super easy for fabrication machinery such as CNC machines and Laser cutters to read Rhino files- there are even grasshopper scripts that can help optimize the cutouts on a sheet to reduce waste.

Best tip I can give you- just give yourself a project and do it. Don't try and learn every feature, just learn enough to get what you need. This is the fastest way to learn any 3d program- there's an online tutorial or forum for pretty much anything nowadays.

Due to the Rhino software base, which is Nurbs, the environment of this software is softer in designing models, the architect can model his thoughts without any restrictions. But, for example, in software such as Revit, the software is specific to building construction and follows the rules of construction, and creating complex models is not easy at first glance.

My experience with Rhino is it is the most accurate 3D modelling software in terms of Free flowing 3D modeling not comparing to BIM softwares. The software is light and works with both NURBS and meshes. Syncs easily and smoothly with most rendering engines. The addition of grasshopper allows easy addition of parametric elements into the work flow. Overall it is really fun software to use only thing is you need to spend a lot of time around it. Once you master it there is no going back. Recent updates of Rhino Inside Revit is making even more important in architectural field.
