How can a writing mentor improve your style?

I'm not sure anyone can. Nor should you want to. A "style" is like evolution; it develops through time, discipline and hands-on your work routinely. It can't be taught, in other words.

There are various writers offering courses on writing skills these days. One should go through the curriculums carefully to be able to home on to the one meeting your exact requirement.

Actually, I agree with the fact that writers seeking mentorship should look for online platforms or courses that offer mentoring services or opportunities.

A writing mentor is important to teach you and once in a while remind you how important and impactful your words are. When writing becomes an everyday task, writers tend to forget the huge impact they can have on their audience and they start taking their writing, writing style very lightly. A writing mentor helps you reconnect with your audience. Also helps in finding the right balance between saying the right thing while never hurting the audience.

The more involved you will be in the course during its duration, the better use you will be able to make of it. Keep up with the pace, do the assignments, if any,…take feedback, improvise, ask questions, clear doubts. No amount of google search will be as handy as a mentor’s one to one word of advice. I always wrote out of passion for writing. For many years into freelancing. Until, my clients started relying on me and began asking for more… like white papers, books etc. So, I realised it was time to upgrade the skills! And yes, having a mentor was a big help!

If you're wanting to be a writing mentor, it's also important that you have empathy and understanding while also being able to be honest and constructive. You're not there to tell the writer what they want to hear, but instead help elevate them so they can operate at their highest potential. It takes some tact to be able to tell people where their writing is struggling and how to improve it. Writers, especially newer ones, aren't exactly known to have the thickest skin, and it's your job to help the writer understand that they're constantly going to be in a growth phase because they're constantly going to keep getting better, so long as they persevere and keep writing -- hopefully with more of your guidance.

I believe the act of writing stems from life itself. The experiences we have, our emotions, our mistakes, and our moments of triumph, all of these things contribute to the makings of a writer, and a writing mentor. Looking back on my college career, many times I found inspiration from my peers. It's through the sharing of diverse life experiences and unique stories where I think the true spirit of mentorship comes from.
