How can you adapt to changing project requirements as a software developer?

Change is the only constant thing. Agile methodology provides you with tool to embrace the same effectively. Team that embraces change has been successful in delivering value to its customers that is aligned with the changing times.

Keep it nimble, service oriented, layered architecture, use open frameworks ( although these principles may not apply to all situations) - since change is the only constant, developers & solution architects should always design for dynamic business needs, where feedback from clients, field resources, ecosystem players would keep driving new business requirements.

Never be afraid of refactoring the code which is mandated by the changing requirements. But its so vital your code framework is build as testable and if you followed TDD or SOLID principles from the inception then it be much easier to handle the changes within agile set up.

As with anything in nature, software requirements too change. Timing of such changes determine the effort and complexity. Developers should make it a habit to write code that adheres to single responsibility principle. So the root cause of the change can be defined and all appropriate changes are collected/understood before starting developing those. I believe Agile is a good way of doing projects but Analysis must be strong to control, understand and reasonably apply the Change.

I would caution against using branches. It's very tempting to leave branches open for a long time, complicating merges, because branches will diverge more and more over time unless changes on the parent branches are often merged. And the more branches you have open, the more difficult it will be to keep changes on those branches compatible. I've worked on complicated merges of multi year old branches that took multiple days for two or three people and which had lots of conflicts to solve, and which caused lots of regression. As an alternative to make features inaccessible, use feature toggles. A feature can often easily be made unavailable by hiding a menu item or button, which can be set in compiler options, or even a configuration file.

So, have multiple sessions with stakeholders to understand what is actually required from the proposed change.
