This is my favourite. I was doing it early in life, even before I knew what I was doing and why I was doing it. I was just loving the experience. Later in life, I encashed this inborn quality. A senior executive once told me that people weren't contributing to his leadership learning group; he then 'ordered' me to post. Three months later, the group closed. If he had spoken with (not at) his team, he would have found that we didn't relate to the need for the group. And therein lies CAR; the secret to sustainable communities: 1. Ensure people feel COMPETENT to contribute (technical competence through to subject matter). 2. Empower them with AUTONOMY (the choice to participate). 3. Ensure the content is RELEVANT to their needs & values. Communicating CAR will help energise your engagement and retention.
