Calculating the balance of trade involves comparing a country's exports (goods and services sold to other countries) with its imports (goods and services purchased from other countries). If exports exceed imports we get positive BOT and if imports exceed export then we get negative BOT. By default, the exports and imports are calculated annually.

Two countries well known for their trade balances are China and the United States of America. They both hold extreme positions. The US runs the largest trade deficit worldwide while China has the largest trade surplus. While a trade deficit has disadvantages such as putting pressure on the currency of a certain country, the US is spared that pressure with their currency being an international reserve currency and widely used in international transactions.

The trade balance provides much more information than is usually realised. Apart from the purely trade-related question of what is bought or sold, the trade balance is often the most important component of the current account. In this sense, a negative trade balance usually means that the country has a debt with the rest of the world that it needs to cover in some way. And that means, for example, that in this scenario we are talking about a country that is going to try to attract a lot more foreign investment or that it is a country that is going to borrow more from international creditors.
