How can you choose between a DSLR or camcorder for videography?

DSLR or Mirrorless? That is the question facing photographers day in and day out. Or is it? With the rise of Sony's Alpha line up of Mirrorless cameras, Canon and Nikon were just a few (long) years behind and have since released their Mirrorless options. Mirrorless will provide you with a faster shutter speed for action shots, more flexibility within the raw data of the image as it is a better quality image, and finally give you the option to be a hybrid creator for both photo and video.

Camcorders are what you see in your parents basement. One unit to rule them all, no excess lenses, built in zoom, built in ND filters, Built in mic, LCD screen and a viewfinder. These are typically used for broadcast type content. Be it sports, music, art etc so there are plenty of input/output jacks. That said, they are becoming obsolete with the rise of affordable cinema cameras/lenses as well as the mirrorless movement.

Advantages of a DSLR for Videography: ➡️ Image Quality: Higher image quality with a larger sensor and increased resolution. ➡️ Lens Versatility: More lens options for various effects (wide-angle, telephoto, macro, prime lenses). Adaptability to lenses from other brands or systems with adapters. ➡️ Manual Settings: More manual settings and modes for exposure, focus, white balance, and color adjustment. ➡️ Flexibility in Post-Production: Ability to shoot in RAW format, providing greater flexibility in post-production. ➡️ Cinematic Video: Capable of producing sharper, more detailed, and cinematic video.

DSLRs excel in image quality with large sensors and interchangeable lenses for versatile shooting. They offer manual controls for creative freedom and optical viewfinders for accurate framing. Their durability and fast performance, coupled with advanced video capabilities, make DSLRs preferred for both photography and videography.

You can solve the battery life with an external power supply and a nice rig to carry the camera. I would point another advantage here, you can also change lens on a DSLR in opposite to a camcorder, which makes it more versatile.

Bulkier and heavier compared to compact cameras, making them less convenient for travel or casual use. Learning curve for beginners due to complex manual controls and settings. Limited video autofocus capabilities compared to dedicated camcorders or mirrorless cameras. Higher cost for quality DSLR bodies and lenses, making them a substantial investment for some users.

Para grabaciones de video de larga duración, siempre la videocámara será la mejor opción. Pueden trabajar horas seguidas sin recalentarse, y en muchos casos tienen más salidas de video no solo como hdmi sino también como RCA o SDI.

Compact and lightweight design, making them highly portable and convenient for on-the-go shooting. Dedicated video features such as built-in microphones, image stabilization, and autofocus optimized for video recording. Longer recording times compared to DSLRs or mirrorless cameras, ideal for capturing events or extended footage. Generally more affordable than high-end DSLR or mirrorless camera setups, offering good value for video-centric users.

Las ventajas de una videocámara, en mi caso con la Blackmagic 6K Pro, se notan especialmente en la calidad de imagen y el control sobre detalles técnicos que marcan la diferencia, sobre todo en producciones profesionales. Comparado con una DSLR que utilizaba hace unos años, noté una gran diferencia en distintos aspectos: En el rango dinámico y la capacidad para grabar en condiciones de poca luz, así como en una mayor resolución para distintos formatos. Además, el manejo del color y las opciones de formato BRAW ofrecen mucha más flexibilidad en la postproducción, lo que permite obtener resultados más cinematográficos y profesionales que son ajustables a cada proyecto.

Las videocámaras actuales tienen muy buenas opciones tanto de codecs de video logarítmico como de excelentes lentes... una desventaja es que muy pocas son de lente intercambiable. Otro problema es su precio: si deseas una buena videocámara probablemente debas desembolsillar una buena cantidad de dinero, especialmente si piensas usarla para transmisión de televisión en vivo.

Mirrorless options from all manufactures. They are becoming wildly affordable while pushing out incredible quality. Especially for start ups and existing businesses. You do not need to spend $3-4k on a camera set up in 2024. You just have to leverage the product that is available in your price range.
