One of the best ways to learn invaluable skills is to go out and do your own projects; hands down, this is how I have managed to progress in my career when there have been limited opportunities. Whether it be setting yourself a challenge, like 1 video every day for a month, or purchasing a new piece of kit/software and seeing how it works in your production, the skills that you learn by "just doing" beat any course, or watching any how-to video.

Be willing to take risks and start small. Be open to doing things that you normally wouldn't. When I was 30 I took an internship at a digital production company before anyone was watching videos on their phone. I was already an established producer and director in unscripted tv and the oldest intern at the company but I wanted to be at the forefront of digital content production because I could tell that's where we were headed as both an industry and a society. When the rest of the industry caught up, I was one of the few producers in unscripted who had experience in digital. It pays off to take those risks especially when it comes to learning something new.
