Designing a system can be a daunting task if one does not take the time to really understand its requirements beyond the client's specifications and scope of work documents. System design should start with a thorough understanding and identification of design inputs. Design inputs include but are not limited to available drawings, design basis documents, manufacturer's datasheets, calculations, applicable standards and regulatory requirements. The designer has to be able to identify the type of design from system modification, upgrade or just a new build. Either way, the function of the system and synergistic effects of its implementation as it pertains to other systems should be understood. This will require an in depth FMEA.

In my experience understanding and accepting the requirements of a client is the most important phase of electrical design or any other design works for that matter. In addition all relevant stakeholders within the client also shall be participated to include all the requirements because every department has its own specific and somehow different requirements. After understanding the client brief requirements the designer shall analyse it and can make recommendations according to its expertise. This will initiate subsequent discussions and makes the design process smooth which in turn makes the whole project be completed according to the schedule.

The needs should be clearly noted down in such a way that designer and client finally fully comprehend the scope. Then, in the end, all the notes including the hidden outcomes should be presented to client, discussed and evaluated from client again. It is, in my opinion, designer's obligation to mention future upgrades that are about to come, keeping thus the system cost effective and up to the latest technical standards.
