How can you design for mass production without sacrificing user experience?

There is no correlation between both. You can mass produce great products that have the potential or transforming and delighting the user or you can mass produce crap. The issue is about cost of production and final price to the customer. Focus on how to mass produce as close as the cost goal so everyone has a positive experience.

The question of mass production or customization places both as competing priorities that need to be traded-off. While this is true in some sense reframing the question into "why not have both?" may help us address key issues. The term generally used now is mass customization - how do we have customization with economy of scale. It may sound counter intuitive, but it may just be possible for certain applications. Understanding users needs is key to mass customization. Truth be told, too many choices and options does not lead to greater customer satisfaction. Customers want choices - the power to choose. That can be satisfied with limited options, there is a diminishing marginal utility in choices!

The concern I have with UX and UI is that all OEM's develop solutions as "one size fits all". My grandmother is not tech focused and my teen son is dumbed down by the operating system. A ramp up from a basic interface with clear functionality that scales up to personalized coding algorithm control would allow 0 to 10 versions of any control system. Less should be more unless you want more! I would go so far as to program language and skill training and even games into the system. Reward Thinking!

I believe most often customers are aware what they need, however not able to express it. Once we get the requirements, the next challenge is to prioritise the same and align with firm’s ability to meet efficiently. Simply saying, find what matters the most to customer and what can be traded-off. Based on my experience in leading product & business devp, the famous "Kano's model" created by Dr. Noriaki Kano, enables product creation by closely interacting with “users” to capture their needs , preferences and helps us focus on the features that matter most to them and differentiate our product from rest. Fortunately got opportunity to learn this from Dr. Kano himself during VLFM program and have successfully applied in multiple projects.

Trying to solve every problem leads to solving none. In the feasibility-driven design process, user experience needs to be defined in a context. There is no absolute user experience. For every delightful experience, there are two factors responsible. 1. Setting up the right user expectations for the product 2. Delivering a little more value than the cost of the product In such scenarios where the product needs to be designed for mass production the design activity becomes a puzzle-solving activity where designers have to deal with standards and apply design thinking in integrating them to achieve the goal. Key to this approach is the deep collaboration between Designers, SCM, and the Marketing team from day Zero of Product Development.

Define precise design goals focusing on user needs, functionality, and manufacturing feasibility. This ensures alignment with user expectations and production capabilities. Create multiple prototypes and conduct thorough user testing to refine designs iteratively, aiming to strike a balance between usability and manufacturability. Involve cross-disciplinary teams designers, engineers, and manufacturer early in the process to align goals, ensuring feasibility without compromising quality. Streamline designs by standardizing components or materials where feasible. This simplification aids mass production while upholding user-centric aspects. Regularly validate designs with user feedback throughout the development process.

If we do not talk about a redesign, most of the time a new design will be made in cooperation with research and development. Es especially in case new technology should be implemented. As soon as the first step has been made, the designer should look through the eyes of the production. In the ever-evolving landscape of design, where methodologies and approaches abound, one principle stands tall as the bedrock of successful design endeavors — defining clear and concise design goals. While each stage of the design process plays a vital role, it is my belief that "Define Your Design Goals" holds the utmost significance. Understanding users, iterating and prototyping, considering the context, and all the other facets of the design process contribute to a holistic design strategy. However, upon closer inspection, these elements seamlessly converge into the broader realm of "Evaluate and Optimize." It is in the evaluative phase that we scrutinize user interactions, refine prototypes, and adapt to contextual nuances.

Balance aesthetics and manufacturability When designing for mass production, it is important to strike a balance between aesthetics and manufacturability. While aesthetics play a significant role in enhancing the user experience, overly complex or intricate designs may pose challenges in the manufacturing process.

Create multiple prototypes to test and refine design elements. Use 3D printing, mock-ups or digital models to visualize and assess form, function and manufacturability. Continuously gather user feedback during the prototyping phase to ensure the design aligns with user expectations and needs. Apply insights from user testing to refine prototypes iteratively. Balance user-centric elements with manufacturability, optimizing for both usability and production scalability. Foster collaboration between design, engineering and manufacturing teams to streamline the prototype-to-production transition. Address technical constraints early and iteratively to maintain the desired user experience in the final mass-produced product.

Iteration and prototyping: These processes play a role in testing, validating, and refining your design concepts, all while enabling effective communication and collaboration with key stakeholders, such as clients, manufacturers, and end-users. Prototyping can be executed in various levels of fidelity, ranging from initial sketches to detailed models and comprehensive mockups. This graded approach allows for the exploration and refinement of design solutions, ensuring that every aspect of the product is thoroughly examined and optimized. With this approach you can create products that are not only user-friendly, but also functional and visually appealing. And essential stage for a product ready for mass production made for the users.

In most cases, mass production is one-way traffic. Making changes in the product after production is a mammoth task as it has a multiplier effect on SCM. For this, it is important to do exhaustive concept testing and product testing with multiple prototypes and mockups to ensure that there are no last-minute surprises at the time of the production. A well-planned prototyping and testing process also helps in the value addition of the original design. Before the prototyping phase, everyone sees the concept either on the screen or on paper. All the stakeholders get to experience the concept first time through the prototypes only. It is therefore that phase of product design where real inputs start flowing in from all the stakeholders.

Iterate, prototype, and refine designs using diverse techniques, including virtual design, modeling, and simulations. Leverage simulations to reduce prototyping costs by replicating real-world scenarios, minimizing errors, and enhancing efficiency. While each step in the design process plays a vital role, the evaluation and optimization phase stands out as an ongoing journey, ensuring that a product or solution evolves to meet the ever-changing needs and expectations of users. This phase isn't a finite conclusion but rather a seamless transition into the next iteration or improvement cycle.

Many of our projects have shown that the development process benefits greatly if the designer or constructor visits various production facilities or manufacturers and thus gains a better understanding of toolmaking and the feasibility of the designs. In this way, it is possible to ensure at an early stage that the planned design draft is also realisable and save unnecessary correction loops and adjustments to the design. Ideally, the necessary consultations and optimisation rounds with the manufacturer can be reduced to a minimum. Product development can then be progressed in a more targeted manner and the CAD design can be brought to the pre-production stage.

Echoing many others here, feedback loops aren't a "one-and-done" phase in the design process but more so, a waltz that carefully knits the entire design process together. The roadmap from problem identification, to getting the product on the shelf and then evaluating the product post-market–all of which require re-evaluating the initial hypothesis, refining it, better understanding it, and adjusting it based on the findings. Each process, and certainly each designer, needs a certain level of humility, enough to understand when feedback doesn't fit the narrative instead of making the narrative fit the feedback. This can lead to huge financial losses where simply trusting the process and taking even one step back can prevent this.

Gather comprehensive data on user behavior, preferences and environmental contexts. Understand how and where the product will be used to tailor its features and usability accordingly. Align design choices with production capabilities and limitations. Factor in materials, fabrication methods and assembly processes to ensure manufacturability at scale without compromising usability. Consider cultural and societal contexts. Adapt designs to diverse preferences, ensuring they resonate with various demographics without compromising functionality. Address sustainability concerns by integrating eco-friendly materials and manufacturing processes, aligning with the broader environmental context.

Context encompasses the physical, social, and cultural environments in which your product will be used, as well as its potential impact and implications on users and the broader world. Tools such as journey maps, storyboards, and impact analyses can be employed to help understand and address the context of your product. Revealing the multifaceted nature of context, ensuring a more comprehensive understanding of the various environments in which your product will be used. With context, you can design products that are not just relevant and meaningful, but also responsible.

Design ethnography is a fundamental here–a form of user research that studies how people interact with design in their everyday lives (particularly in this instance the use of contextual inquiry). It can help designers understand the needs and behaviors of their target users but also evaluate natural behavior of a product not yet used before and the troubles attributed to its use. While there are other methods to explore contextual exploration like A) Mind Mapping, B) SCAMPER, C) Storyboarding, D) Group Sketching/Round Robing, E) Questioning Assumptions/Owling (List out all hypotheses and find out what you don’t know), and F) The Breakdown, Build Up (List out each feature, environment, and use, to combine them).

I don’t know any successful designers that don’t have a list of what they would change on every product they have made. Always learning and continuing to improve the experience you deliver is a major part of what drives the design community.

Constantly refine and test prototypes based on user feedback, ensuring the design aligns with user needs and desires while considering production feasibility. Analyze user data, market trends, and user feedback to identify pain points and areas for improvement, guiding design iterations for enhanced user satisfaction. Engage multidisciplinary teams to gain diverse insights, fostering innovation, and encouraging a holistic perspective on both user-centric design and mass production requirements. Assess product performance post-launch, gathering insights on real-world usage to inform future design iterations for subsequent production runs.

In the iterative nature of design, the evaluation phase (step 4) involves assessing the performance and user feedback of a product or prototype. It is during this evaluation that opportunities for improvement are identified. Subsequently, the learning and improvement phase (step 6) encompasses implementing these insights to enhance the design.

As a PLM consultant collaborating with a tier 1 automotive steering manufacturer, I integrated user-centric design with mass production, emphasizing continuous improvement. This article is supposed to be about designing for mass production, and yet it's entirely about the UX and designer experience, and has nothing to do with the actual manufacturing of a product. Designing a product for mass production requires an understanding of trade-offs to UX. For example, the crown on the first Apple Watch is a critical UX feature, all of the way down to its tactility. This was a high risk feature to implement mechanically and involved innovating multiple new manufacturing processes to achieve. Given its criticality to the user experience, that risk was deemed worth it. However, another feature may be less critical to UX and so may be simplified in order to reduce cost, complexity, or program risk.

It's important to know what are the essential design parameters are needed to satisfy users wants and requirements. The design parameters could be translated to manufacturing parameters to be standardised in manufacturing process. Think about IC chip design and manufacturing - these chips are designed for many different uses and specs based on a set of design rules supported by a robust manufacturing process. Thus the same manufacturing process can support a plethora of devices from CPUs/GPUs to communication ICs etc.

Unfortunately design is a far from inclusive field that often caters to the have's of the world, and the needs minorities and people with disabilities are almost always neglected. We mass produce, but fail to consider the masses. I mean, how long did it take for car manufacturers to develop a female crash test dummy to they can make their products safe for women as well? 2022.
