How can you detect manufacturing defects?

1 Visual inspection

Visual inspection is the simplest and most widely used method for detecting manufacturing defects. It involves examining the product or its components with the naked eye or with magnifying devices, such as microscopes, cameras, or scanners. Visual inspection can detect defects such as cracks, scratches, dents, stains, discolorations, misalignments, or missing parts. 2 Dimensional measurement

Dimensional measurement is the method of verifying the size, shape, and position of the product or its components against the specified tolerances and specifications. Dimensional measurement can detect defects such as warping, distortion, deformation, or deviation from the design. Dimensional measurement can be done by using instruments such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, or rulers, or by using advanced techniques such as coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), laser scanners, or optical comparators.

5 Statistical process control

Statistical process control (SPC) is the method of monitoring and controlling the variation and quality of the manufacturing process by using statistical tools and techniques. SPC can detect defects by identifying and eliminating the causes of variation, such as human error, machine wear, environmental factors, or material inconsistency. SPC can be done by using tools such as charts, graphs, histograms, or control charts that display the data and trends of the process parameters and quality indicators.

6 Quality audit

Quality audit is the method of reviewing and evaluating the compliance and effectiveness of the quality management system and the quality standards and requirements of the product or its components. Quality audit can detect defects by identifying and correcting the gaps, weaknesses, or non-conformities in the quality system or the quality practices. Quality audit can be done by using tools such as checklists, questionnaires, interviews, or observations that assess the quality policies, procedures, records, or evidence of the manufacturing process.
