They do not have prior experience in working with consultants, so the budget and schedule are often not known until the final stages of the proposal. Some clients know the problem they want to address and hire a consultant to create a solution for them. Some clients know the problem and the solution, so they hire a consultant to implement the solution in their organization. Some clients don't even know what the problem is in the first place. So where the consultant enters, the timeline and budget is often determined after 3-4 meetings to define the need. Deliverables in such instances are the second priority.

After preparing the requirement document, I would - Ask for the relevant case studies matching the requirement. This will help in clearing out project gaps and help in project improvisation/innovation from consulting firms. - Request an elevator pitch addressing the solutions. - Request client references and speak to them. - Jointly creating measurable outcomes sheet. 2 scenarios: Scenario 1: The experienced client: The above points might help. Scenario 2: The inexperienced client: Needs to create an awareness program with the client by doing a head-on open and transparent (masterclass) session. Possibly propose phase-wise implementation.

There's no big secret: when hiring consultancy services, it's crucial to verify if they possess the necessary expertise to meet your demands. Look into their track record of completed projects and the personal history of the individuals involved in these works. If feasible, inquire about the achieved outcomes and the methodology employed to attain them. You needn't delve deeper than this.

Don't fall for buzzword-laden proposals. If a proposal uses a lot of jargon you are unfamiliar with, look it up. If the result seems stupid when put in plain English, be prepared to ask the firm the plain English version for confirmation. For example: Proposal: "We want to foobiz your beebo." Translation: "We want to hammer out all the dents." During the interview you ask: "So, you want to hammer out all my products' dents?" A competent firm might say: "What? No, that's barbiz. Foobiz means to file down the dents." Another competent firm might say: "That's right. That way your products will fit into the slots they're made for." An incompetent firm might say: "Hammer? What? We want to foobiz your beebo. It's what everyone's doing!"
