In order to foster effective communication and establish clear expectations with the individual in question, it is recommended not to delegate crucial deliverables to them. Instead, identify a team member within our group who possesses the requisite skills and allocate the critical task to them. Concurrently, extend full support and assistance to facilitate a smooth execution of the assigned responsibilities. It is imperative that our primary focus remains on preserving the integrity of our processes to prevent any compromise in the quality of deliverables.

Learn their strengths, don't invoke their weaknesses, and never take offense even when it's intended. If you lack a thick skin, you are going to have a REALLY hard time as a DBA. EVERY TIME you tweak something, a developer will say, "You broke my app. YOU fix it."

First of all, have a thick skin! I have had my share of difficult team members, bosses, direct reports. What I have learnt over the years is you need to remain calm, have thick skin, don't take things to heart. Try to put yourself in their place and see why they feel that way and make an honest assessment if they really have a valid reason to behave the way they are behaving. Is it just with you or with everyone? Is it always or just during high pressure situations? Asking situational questions can reveal a lot about the 'whys' and based on answers to those questions one can decide next steps.

I can tell you from experience that taking a small break when the conversation has heated up, can go a long way! 💨 But remember to always follow at your earliest convenience, and not just let it fade into the daily activities, to ensure feedback and lessons are gained.

First, consider why this interaction is difficult. Don't assign "difficult" to the other person - it's not a helpful label and won't help you make progress. Are they uncommunicative? Forgetful? Acting in some malicious manner? Once you have a better handle on what's going on, seek the source of the difficulty. Is it about you? The project? The company? The deadlines? The client? Their boss? Or maybe it's a hold-over from something else past or personal and the other person isn't doing a good job of keeping boundaries. Finally, let them know the impact of concrete actions on their part. Avoid behavior labeling and blaming. "You missing that deadline caused..." is much more effective than "I can't believe you missed another deadline!"

Take an emotional step back and observe. observe their actions, reactions and interactions, observe your own actions, interactions and reactions, as well as your emotions, thoughts and self talk when it comes to that person. You can only change you. DO you need to change youre emotions, thoughts and self talk when it comes to that person? Can you show more empathy to you and to them? Is there anything you can change about your interactions with them? Can you do anything to change the tone of the relationship you have with them? You never know what is going on for other people, that's not to say to accept disrespectful behaviour but it doesn’t harm to be a little bit more empathetic to everyone.

Consider if they are trying to be difficult, or they just react differently. Possibly your approach is not the best one for them. Different approaches work for different people. There may be invisible disabilities, known or unknown, to consider. A person may be trying, but the ultimate targets and requirements unclear. Managers asking peers of the employee in question to support the person, as a result of their opinions can also cause issues. Asking not assuming the reasons for reactions helps, open relationships are essential. Sometimes problems in relationships come from more than one side.
