How can you develop a vision for the future as a leader?

One thing I find most helpful is to talk to the people like the people Michelle Obama described in her recent biography and referred to as her kitchen cabinet. My kitchen cabinet is a collection of family and friends with different backgrounds and relationships with me that will give me honest feedback. The value of input from others comes from really listening to what they say. Then decide on what changes you want to make to better align your behaviors with your values and goals. Articulate these changes to your cabinet and ask them to help you hold yourself accountable. The key is focus on two to three things and stick with it for at least six weeks minimum. Yes, you can change too! Plan, do, check, adjust, and repeat.

Developing a vision for the future as a leader is a multifaceted process that involves strategic thinking, foresight, and effective communication. Firstly, it requires a deep understanding of the current state of affairs, both within the organization and in the broader external environment. A leader must assess industry trends, technological advancements, and societal changes to anticipate future challenges and opportunities. While proficient in inspiring teams with overarching visions,I recognize the need to enhance translating strategy into execution. My growth focus lies in purpose-driven leadership, a personal passion for guiding others to discover their vocations. Actively addressing feedback on conflict resolution and directive communication,I view external shifts as opportunities to reinforce our core purpose.In essence, my leadership centers on inspiring others, refining operations, and navigating challenges while upholding fundamental values.

Absolutely, understanding your core values and recognizing both strengths and weaknesses is crucial for assessing your current situation . It enables you to leverage strengths for opportunities and address weaknesses to eliminate threats, providing a clear vision for yourself and those you lead. It's a transformative process that aligns personal growth with leadership goals. This is where it beings and thus requires quality time from a leader.

Ever lead a team full steam ahead, only to hit a brick wall of frustration? I did. I was so focused on the destination, I forgot to check the map – my team's strengths, fears, the roadblocks ahead. Brutal lesson learned: leadership starts with self-awareness. So, I took a step back. Honest reflection (not always pretty!). I discovered my strengths (idea machine!) and weaknesses (delegation disaster!). Adjusted my approach, played to strengths, offered support, opened communication. Boom! Team thrived, project soared. The key? Honest self-reflection. It's not about perfection, it's about understanding yourself, your team, and the road ahead. Map your leadership journey, seek feedback, be real.

From my view, desired outcomes shall be linked with the answer to the question WHY do we want to do it. Each and every organization exists to create VALUE for it's stakeholders in a sustainable manner. So specific to your organization, first you need to set a long-term goal aligned with the value you want to create. To acheive the long-term goal and to ensure you are on right path, short-term goals and mid-term goals shall be defined.

If we do not know where we are going, any road can take us there. This is inspired from the story o Alice in Wonderland. Hence where is a big question and then Why is the second question. As we close a year and tart a new one I find this appraisal and questions very valuable . It will define for me what aspects of my work will get lion share of my focus. This focus enables me to make requests to my team, form a plan and drive it too. Most improtantly it provides me and my team a vision and purpose for the coming time frame.

I believe that you define your vision for the future long before becoming a leader. That vision and the irresistible call to walk beside it is what drives you to take what you’ve defined and actively lead the design of the strategies that allow the vision to come alive and remain alive.

As a leader, here are two keys you must keep in mind to have a balanced approach as you are exploring your options for vision setting: Lead with Awareness: Understanding the landscape you operate within is critical to level set and finding what’s broken. Take an audit of the information at your disposal to create an accurate picture of what “is,” so that you have a baseline to build what is “to come.” Lead with Courage: While understanding your current circumstances is critical, don’t be hindered by what you see. Make courageous goals that cause you to challenge the status quo, discover what’s missing, grow what’s working, and reframe what’s not to get to an ideal, innovative result that effectively leads your mission forward.

Now, all analytical parameters will be handy with you. Based on all the data and information, different short term goals shall be created to acheive the common long term goal. Each option shall have a range of short-term goals and well defined links between these goals to achieve the desired long-term outcome. The key factor is, different options shall be brought to the table without any judgement at initial stage. Inclusion and diversity plays a vital role. Brilliant options will be surfaced out when it will resulted from brainstorming of people from different skills, gender, background, geographical regions, experiences etc. That will provide us diversity of thoughts, ideas, values and perspectives resulting into unbelievable options.

Now, after having a bunch of options,you need to evaluate each one with respect to CAPEX required vs Planned Budget, key differentiators, compexity, allignment with your strength, make vs buy options, outsourcing requirements, dependancy on third party, specialization requirement etc. After evaluation, you need to finalize strategy and methodology to execute it. At the same time, we shall evaluate the risks and maintain a risk register with proposed actions to mitigate or minimize the risks. The assumptions shall be well defined and the basis for assumptions are well discussed and finalized. Catch-up plan shall be in place if the actions is getting derailed from strategy or goal.

Establish ambitious yet achievable goals that push the boundaries of what is currently possible. These goals should challenge and inspire your team to strive for excellence. Consider both short-term and long-term objectives, creating a roadmap that outlines the steps needed to achieve the vision. Foster creativity and experimentation within your team, allowing for the exploration of new ideas and approaches.
