1. Check if the company works in your market, in similar types of companies and when it last filled a similar position 2. Ask for three referral customers 3. Ask what the company's background is, do the recruiters come from HR or perhaps from the business field (advantage) 4. Check how many jobs each recruiter works on at the same time (companies that work on many jobs will give less good service, but companies that make sure that each recruiter does not work on more than 4-5 jobs at the same time will give better service)

Because, even if the employee the company provides you is very good, he/she may leave you after a short time due to "tissue incompatibility". This means the executive search company isn't doing a very good job.

Two huge metrics to measure: 1. Time it takes to see qualified talent (qualified means the hiring manager wants to interview). It should be under 10 days. 2. Submission to interview ratio- If a search firm submits 75 resumes and only 2 are interviewed- your hiring mangers are wasting a lot of time. It should be over 80% of resumes submitted get interviewed.

Evaluate how a company treats candidates by interviewing those who have previously worked with them. If these candidates report negative experiences, it's likely that new candidates might also face similar issues. This can ultimately reflect poorly on your organization.

I am very brutal when evaluating search firms. I want them to represent our brand well, which means: -Understand our business deeply and ask questions that illustrate a willingness to develop that understanding -Be creative and witty in their outreach to candidates -Treat candidates extremely well regardless of how they do in the process 99% of search firms don't or can't do this But when a search firm shows these traits and we bring them on for a search, then I give them as much time, energy, feedback, and whatever else they need from me to be successful. With the calibre of candidates we target, when they win, we win.

After 28 years in Executive Search, there are a few things I think make a search work really well that are often missed. 1) The search firm visits your location. So much of what makes a successful hire is gleaned in the visit…how people engage with each other, is it loud/quiet, where the person will sit, what team/people they will work with etc. 2) They over communicate. Even though there is a period of time where the actual recruiting work is being done, giving frequent updates is key. In the employer side, they are responsive when candidates have questions we may not know the answer to. 3) They have a set process that saves employers time, gives extensive candidate information and is transparent on both strengths and opportunities.

I am also very strict when choosing an executive search firm, but once I work with one, I want them to be my partner and do an outstanding job, so I provide as much information as I can. I usually give them 'exclusivity,' and if the situation allows, I arrange a meeting with the hiring manager directly, too. I think this is a very effective and also a very open approach to setting a good relationship. I see it as a two-way cooperation, and my expectation is that they provide relevant feedback from the market and detailed candidates feedback so we can aim for the best candidate pool.
