How can you effectively use video-based learning in professional development?

Mayer's principles of multimedia learning suggest that clear audio, high-quality visuals, and a coherent structure in educational videos enhance understanding and retention (Mayer, 2009). Research by Metzger, Flanagin, and Medders (2010) highlights the importance of source credibility in online learning environments. The most important one in my experience is aligning multimedia content with learners' goals to maximize efficiency and effectiveness Clark and Mayer (2016).

Even before starting to focus on which format, platform or video content to use it is helpful to understand what, if anything, can be learned via a video. For example, i would not expect that video would be an effective way to learning how to swim or ride a bike, some lessons require discovery through experimentation. Once that question has been answered, focus can now be shifted to the users experience and what formats will best support that.

In education there are a multitude of instructional videos from differentiation to safeguarding. Many schools use them to deliver CPD and support compliance. However, making videos to analyse performance with an instructional coach or peer mentor would make the video and outcomes more impactful. Not many teachers have actually seen themselvrs teach, and had a guided walkthrough of the learners experience.

Consider editing long videos into shorter clips. This makes learning easier to manage and remember. You can focus on what's important, learn at your own pace, and even share these clips with others. It's a smart way to make learning more effective and enjoyable.

Watching actively and critically is mandatory. To that end, when consuming video content for learning, I have shifted from trying to remember every detail (data, stats, figures) to understanding the overall concept or skill. Then I can map the process or details that lead to success. One goal is to learn but the other is to be able to apply the information once the training is complete!

By far the best tool to generate subtitles is YouTube. However most people don’t know that those subtitles can be downloaded and put into other learning management systems by the uploader. Subtitles also enable students to watch in noisy environments and to have translations into their home language.

Personalised videos with guided coaching questions will support positive engagement from the viewer. The more bespoke the video and coaching, the more impact this will have.

I’ve spent countless hours on video-based professional development and while it doesn’t suit my learning style at all, there are definitely some ways to make it more accessible to diverse learners. The ability to move freely between segments of a video, especially when the video has a table of contents to help the viewer navigate between topics, is a huge help. In addition, a feature that is frequently included but also surprisingly often omitted is the ability to adjust the video playback speed. Personally, if the pace of a video is too slow I cannot focus on the content no matter what.

It may be helpful to discuss what you have learned with colleagues from video-based learning to see if they had perspectives different from your own. Also, it could be a good opportunity to share what you thought were the strengths or weaknesses of how the learning was presented. For example, was the material accessible to all learners?

Through discussion, you can gain insights and sharpen your own skills. You can also enhance your perspective by including other ideas into your thinking when it comes to the topic at hand.

Getting the viewer/s to produce a commentary that responds to the video, and then share this with a target audience with the specific aim of engaging in dialogue will support effective collaboration. This would also readily work in remote environments where each commentary can be shared, viewed and then discussed.

This is also one of the best practices to promote engagement for video-based learning. Most of us have experienced some sort of mandatory video training and while this may work to increase the numbers for compliance-based indexes, it also has a heavy apathetic factor to it. "I took it because I had to" Why not have a viewing party with our team? Get some snacks, schedule some time to watch simultaneously and then discuss afterwards. Better in person but can also be done virtually. (I personally stay away from streaming because of lagging or other tech difficulties but scheduling viewing time and discussion time works just fine! )

Put what you are learning directly into practice. Do a project. Teach someone else the material. Be active about locking that information into your brain and into your own knowledge framework of the world.

Guided reflecton through coaching would support the best outcones, with repetition of this bringing about long term changes in practice, thoughts or habits. Self reflection, whilst important, is not always as effective as having third party critical analysis.

In my experience letting the audience reflect on what they have learnt collaboratively and applying it is one of the key element of video-based learning. Having guiding questions before the video and after the video makes the audince foloow through the video keenly.

Reflection is a great tool to enhance ones professional growth. I also believe its a path towards continious improvement. Reflecting on what I've learned involves synthesizing insights gained from various experiences, interactions, and information absorbed over time.

Call it a learning diary, a training log, a development timeline or any other variation on the theme, keep one. These reflective points along the way chart a longer journey where there may be relapses, deeper questions, changes in thoughts or updated practice advice. Having the feedback from your significant journey points is as important as the immediate feedback that ypu receive in a session. Changes in culture and attitudes take time, keep thos 'do you remember when/how/why' moments handy.

I totally agree that to keep learning and growing we must seek feedback to provide us with an indicator of where we are and where we need to be. The following are some suggestions to obtain valuable feedback: - Share your videos with others who can provide you with constructive feedback and suggestions for improvement. - Don't just rely on feedback from people in your immediate circle. Reach out to individuals with different backgrounds, experiences, and expertise to gain varied insights. - Approach feedback with an open mind and a willingness to learn. - Experiment with new techniques and approaches based on the feedback you receive. - Regularly reflect on your experiences, acknowledging both successes and areas for improvement.

Provide opportunities for learners to receive feedback on their understanding and application of the video content. This could be through online discussions, peer reviews, or self-reflection exercises. Feedback helps reinforce learning and identify areas for improvement. Ensure that video content is regularly updated to reflect the latest trends, technologies, and best practices in the field. This keeps the professional development program relevant and valuable to learners.

Good pedagogy triumphs all the time. Watching videos must not be the end of the learning process. Instead it should form an integrated approach with other forms of learning. Despite all its affordances, interactions in a video are limited. Without the socio-constructive theoretical foundations to ensure that new knowledge is embedded in the long term memory of the learner. Videos, just like any content is just that, limited in its interactivity levels without the input of fellow learners and instructor and the of course, the learning environment.

From the perspective of delivering professional development opportunities, it is sometimes helpful to provide a link to a procedural video explaining a software operating procedure that most of your participants may be expected to know, but with which some may be unfamiliar. This way, they can revisit the undergirding skills at a later time with a guided reference.

Instead of having long, drawn out, and boring in-person trainings to cover commonly used resources (gradebooks, data tracking programs, etc.) short videos that walk the user through features can be more effective, especially if made by colleagues for colleagues. Simple tools like Screencastify or similar program make it easy for staff to share what they know with their peers who want it and need it without forcing those who already have those skills to participate in a mass training.

All the above are an amazing opertunity in learning and enhansing knowledge. Interactive information teaches the best. Small videos to remind people the smaller steps that need to be followed when working on a project that needs expiriance. Growing up in a home where we were encouraged to look up information in books can still be done if people understand that a search engine is the equivalent of an index to learn where the information you are looking for is.

By enabling viewers to participate in quizzes, make choices, and engage in scenarios, the learning process becomes much more dynamic and tailored to individual needs.
