How can you encourage team members to take ownership of their work?

In my experience following steps help a lot. 1. Define clear end goal of the work and the time line associated with it. 2. Assign team members to smaller task and clearly define their roles and responsibilities. 3. Openly publish these allocations of members to the tasks and their roles and responsibility within your team. 4. Have regular sync up calls to check on the progress and to address roadblocks.

When everyone knows their unique role and what's expected of them, they feel a personal stake in the outcome. It's no longer just a job; it's their contribution to a bigger picture. Continuous feedback is so important. Personally, I've been in many enterprise roles where we were supposed to do OKRs each year with Qtrly followups. However, as the year went on, I sometimes didn't even have 1-on-1 with mgr for many months at a time. I didn't press them for it as I felt I didn't need any help/oversight. However, it generated huge anxiety when we'd have a 1-1. Providing feedback is a skill that most managers have never formally learned. Failures are part and parcel of success you could not define success without failure in it , however people nowadays aren't very much open to speaking about failures in general , we can make ammends and as a team can appreciate success after failure

Taking ownership of your work is easy. Taking ownership of the fact that YOUR work affects OTHERS’ work is not so easy. I can’t begin to tell you how often I have heard a dashboard developer say, “Yeah, there’s a data quality issue in my dashboard. It’s not my fault; go talk to the data engineer.” And how about the other way around: “Listen, the data was good in Snowflake. I don’t know what’s happening in Tableau. Go talk to the dashboard developer.” Most business stakeholders don’t understand who does what to bring data to life. Instead of saying, “It’s not my problem,” take ownership of the DATA VALUE CHAIN problem, and help your stakeholder resolve the issue.
