How can you engage employees in continuous improvement?

In my view, one relevant point to engage employees is trust... Creating a trust relationship is a key way to create engagement.

Involving employees into continuous improvement creates the sense of belonging, ownership and a voice of the employee. It is a culture and mind set change that is possible in any business, country and culture if approached correctly. It is important that they are trained and briefed to explain the benefits of continuous improvement. They are the experts of their own process and will be able to identify ways and means for improvement to not only benefit the company but also their daily operations and own careers. Recognition should always be given as it goes far further than reward!

It is a solid base for motivating continuous improvement to teach team members about growth mindset vs fixed mindset and the impacts those 2 states of mind have on their life. It can lead to intrinsic motivation for continuous improvement in all areas of their lives, which outlasts KPIs at work!

Unveiling the allure of continuous improvement to employees is pivotal. Make sure they have an enviroment where they can make mistakes to achieve success, always be a supportive leader and be patient. An be side by side with your team, be one of them, when they fall and when they have success

Having a solution already determined and implementing it with expectations to adherence is asking for resistance to change. For teams to feel like the owners of the solution (and results from it), it is imperative involve them and let them find the solution themselves, whether it is the same as yours or not. Letting teams own the problem solving process leads to sense of pride and ownership when they get to see the fruits of their own labor. We are not aiming for just improvement, but instead, sustainable improvement.

Encourage the team to collaborate and communicate with stakeholders is for sure one good step to engage employes, but we cannot forget that human been can be a complex challenge when relationship is the focus... it is normal finding different interest, different expectations, different motivations, etc... More than encourage them for that, we need to calibrate expectatios and guide the team in order to keep the motivation in a good level. If the team is well prepared to stablish a good communication and to manage conflicts and some possible frustrations, the engagement keeps in a good level or even better.

At any point in time, there are new and old people within an organization. It's important that you always reinvigorate the "context"; there is a plethora of tools and approaches you can take in this regard. Understanding your audience in each instance is key to choosing the appropriate tools and language. The "why" must be clear to as many as possible.

Improvement is in DNA. Improvement always start from inside. Sometimes, the problem is that we want to call things with a name but in reality involves a bunch of ideas, tools, etc. but, if we want to aid the improvement process we need to set clear targets to the team, try to gamify and let the people go in their own pace. If the results is not enough, so we need to look for target change or to improve the game strategy and resources

Become their Coach and Mentor. Presenting yourself as a coach or mentor can help employees in continuous improvement. This strategy allows for open communication, personalised guidance and helps the employee with a growth mindset. Being a coach helps the employee to have a sense of value and direct access for improvement in that, he set goals, get valuable feedbacks as well as create conducive environment for employee to enhance skills and contribute to continuous improvement within the firm.
