Of course you need a common file format when working in a team. In order for everyone to be able to continue other peoples' work, you will also need to use a common application (and even all use the same version, otherwise you risk the loss of work or at least editability). As for the file format: use the native format of the application you are using. For Illustrator that is AI (and only AI), for Inkscape that would be SVG. Only then you can have the full power of graphic styles, libraries and such. And please can we all agree on ditching EPS. It's last century's file format. It doesn't support color management, so the effort of having a style guide is somewhat lost on it.
