In my experience, text after an interview can be beneficial to both interviewee and interviewer. It shows a shared interest in the role and serves as a reminder. After interviewing multiple candidates, details can get fuzzy. A quick text helps one stand out. It can open up a direct communication channel. It allows one to start a conversation and stay in touch in the interest of an alternate or a long-term opportunity in the future. It gives a chance to reinforce one's qualifications and reiterate one's interest and recap how one can be a good fit. It displays confidence and initiative. Reaching out first is a bold but strategic move. The key is keeping the text short, polite, and adding value. This opens the door for an ongoing dialogue.

Keep your follow up short, sharp, timely and specific. - Follow up in a day or two. Not on the same day, not too many days later - Thank them for their time - Remind them why specifically you will add value to the role, keep it short - Add a specific example from the interview that stood out to you in a positive way - Ask about or reconfirm next steps Your goal here is to keep you in mind and help the hiring manager prioritise the recruitment work within their busy day.

Most likely at the end of the day or the morning of the next day (1-2 days max). And be careful not to mess up the companies. Personally, I don't mind getting it immediately after the interview - I generally reply/read when I can.

Just because you have someone’s mobile number doesn’t mean it’s appropriate to text them. If your interview was confirmed by text (not ideal but I’m sure it happens), then you can send a follow up text. If the bulk of communication and confirmation was via email, you should be communicating by email. Also remember that how your texting relationship at this stage will continue and likely become more intrusive when you are hired. So keep communication short and only respond during working hours and when is convenient for you. Set those boundaries early on!

The follow-up is a networking opportunity. You may not be right for this job. You may not be right for this company. But, you now know people you didn't know before. Ask yourself: What creates a bond here? And, text isn't going to do that. Connect via Linkedin, thank the person for their time, tell them that whatever the outcome you want to continue to be part of their professional community.
