How can you foster a culture of research collaboration in HE?

Fostering a culture of research collaboration in higher education institutions requires a strategic approach that involves faculty, students, and the administrations. Here are some key factors to set the goals: 1) Leadership 2) Support 3) Interdisciplinary initiatives 4) Research Cluster and Teams 5) Networking and Events 6) Inclusivity By taking a comprehensive approach with the above factors, plan your goals.

To build research collaborations at institutional level there must be a dedicated position coordinating researcher’s meetups and communication. Nevertheless, it's not one person’s responsibility, there should be a culture that encourages participants to share freely their past achievements & future projects. Further, Each researchers might be in different stages of their researh journey. Institutions need to make sure that there is a support available to each individuals whether they are budding researchers or they may have spend years working on a research field. Acknowledging & rewarding researcher’s efforts would motivates them to share ideas & build collaborations.

To promote the culture of research collaboration in higher education, first and foremost it is necessary that we create a research environment for our young students, and at the same time we develop a culture where every individual should contribute in other's academic development. This would certainly require participation from all stakeholders i.e. Teachers, Students and other public/ private authorities who are responsible to bring changes to this system.

Don’t be paranoid. Share your toolkit openly and be always open to new collaborations. Make your codes and data public and easy to use

Collaboration first has to be within the organization at the initial stage. Collaboration among peers( student-student,staff-staff,student-staff, etc.) is a dire necessity and that is possible only when the Institution's mission, vision, goals, and objective are aligned to drive innovation and create pathways to research. The induction of resources aligned with the organization's mission and vision is again a necessity as such collaborations require innovative mindsets. Hard and Soft Infrastructure and Resource availability has high priority within the organization. The open and progressive mindset of the key stakeholders other than employees and students plays a crucial role in advancing research within and outside the organization.

The idea of seeking diverse and complementary collaborators is excellent but could be more actionable. To operationalize this, consider developing a "Collaborator Matrix" that identifies gaps in skills, expertise, and perspectives within the existing team. Use this matrix to guide the search for new collaborators who can fill these gaps. Additionally, implement a structured onboarding process to integrate new collaborators effectively, ensuring that their unique skills and perspectives are utilized optimally. Lastly, foster an inclusive environment that values and leverages diversity, making it a cornerstone of the collaboration's culture.

If academia does not adress the precariousness of research work, we will eventually lose many early career researchers. This will greatly impact diversity in research, and as highlighted before diversity is very important.

To embrace diversity and inclusion, research collaboration should come by way of open affiliation for most projects. Many research organizations have done a great job at developing programs/initiatives that allow other external researchers to participate and collaborate in the future.

The importance of proactively identifying individuals or groups with expertise, perspectives, and backgrounds that align with and enhance research objectives cannot be overstated. Collaboration should promote multiple ideas and approaches by bringing unique qualities to the table. In addition, embracing inclusivity ensures that voices from diverse fields and demographics are heard, resulting in better outcomes.

Co-design research projects, when conducted thoughtfully by researchers who are sincerely invested in supporting their collaborating stakeholders, can be an effective way to engage in collaborative, scholarly research while necessarily reaching beyond the ivory tower.

The idea of establishing clear roles & responsibilities in research collaboration is essential but could be further optimized. Introduce a dynamic "Roles & Responsibilities Matrix" that can be updated as the project evolves. This matrix should be accessible to all team members & include not just roles but also decision-making authority & key deliverables. Consider using project management software to track responsibilities & deadlines, offering real-time updates and accountability. This will streamline coordination & reduce the risk of duplication or conflict. Lastly, schedule regular "role review" meetings to discuss any changes in responsibilities or to address any emerging challenges, ensuring collaboration remains agile & adaptable.

Identifying a lead researcher brings focus, while co-investigators or assistants share the workload, each bringing their unique expertise. When we practice active listening, we establish a safe and nurturing environment for collaborative innovation. This environment becomes the foundation for constructing support structures enriched with valuable, purposeful knowledge. Such an approach enables us to better track, comprehend and connect with the perspectives of individuals. It also promotes responsiveness with the ultimate goal of bridging the gap between effective speaking and listening. This is especially pertinent in our pursuit of frequent and impactful communication.

Acknowledging contributions is key, but let's get creative. Introduce a "Collaboration Milestone Board" 🤝📌to visually track and celebrate team achievements. Use this board in meetings to spotlight 📢 individual and collective wins🏆 For external recognition, launch a "Collaboration Spotlight" blog or newsletter📰. Feature interviews with collaborators, discussing their roles and contributions, to humanize the research. Lastly, establish a "Peer Recognition Program"🔍📢🏆 where team members nominate each other for small rewards based on standout contributions. This creates a culture of gratitude and mutual respect.

In order to foster a culture of research collaboration in higher education, contributions must be acknowledged and celebrated. Collaboration projects are more committed when achievements are rewarded. Furthermore, it promotes a sense of belonging and pride in the research community.

Collaborative learning is a fantastic way to foster teamwork through meaningful interaction. It's been said that 'Alone we are smart, and together we are brilliant'. By working together in groups, thought-provoking questions and valuable feedback can be initiated to improve learning experiences. Collaboration in research can enhance ideas by bringing together diverse outlooks and experiences to make research more meaningful and inclusive in nature. Researchers need to identify their goals and subsequently select collaborators who can add value by providing diverse perspectives while fostering a common goal. Researchers can greatly benefit from working together with people who have different expertise, experiences, and cultural backgrounds.

Institutions must regularly assess the effectiveness of existing collaborative initiatives. The process involves tracking key performance indicators, seeking feedback, and reviewing collaborative projects' impact on research. In this regard, identifying areas for improvement is crucial. By removing obstacles to cooperation, introducing supportive policies, and aligning collaboration with the goals and values of the academic community, this can be achieved.

1. Provide incentive for research collaboration not only within departments, colleges or universities but collaboration with multiple institutions. 2. Higher incentive should be given to research with measurable social impact such as contribution to policy, evidence-based research that drives decisions and implementation strategies. 3. Provide avenues for people to collaborate and these avenues or opportunities should be based on merit.

I have had the opportunity to work with two contrasting HE organisations in the past. Both want to encourage research. But one went all out to push faculty to undertake research whereas the other one adopted a gradual approach. The first one reaped immediate rewards but also had instances in which the faculty adopted unethical practices to increase their research output. In the second one, the lower level of pressure helped the faculty to slowly adjust to the new research focused model. In numerical and ranking terms, the first organisation is much ahead of the. But in terms of long term sustainability and practical issues like employee retention and avoidance of burnout, the second organisation is doing better in my opinion.

I think we have to ensure that faculty policies like tenure and promotion value these innovative research collaborations. What I have seen work well at my institution is to also offer funding associated with work where researchers across fields collaborate. Incentivizing this work is really important given how stretched for time and resources faculty can be.

All good research starts with asking good questions and being open to questioning those questions. Collaborative research begins with finding researchers who are open to multiple levels of interrogation including self interrogation and suspension of judgement. A key to a team moving forward is respect for one another with an openness to constructive criticism.
