How can you grow your business and reach more clients through partnerships?

Partnerships are simply two companies wanting to work together for a common goal, and the amalgamation of many sometimes works better than trying to go at it alone.

In today's world it is not necessary to go at it alone. Try to define early on what's the core value that you deliver. Everything else can potentially be brought to life by suppliers, subcontractors, or partners. Think about how can the final product be delivered to the customer in a joint fashion, where someone else COMPLEMENTS your core value and makes it whole. Doing business with partners is a whole sub-discipline and there are professionals who spend their lives working on partnerships. Partners can: Reduce your investment Get you to market quicker Expand into territories/markets that you cannot go into Shift fixed expenses into variable expenses Ultimately, partners can make your product or service better!

*Identify Complementary Businesses: Look for businesses that complement your product or service in related fields or those that offer products or services that pair well with yours. *Networking and Industry Events: Attend industry conferences, seminars, and networking events to meet potential partners. *Research Competitors' Partnerships: Analyze your competitors' partnerships to understand their strategy and identify potential partners for your business. *Leverage Existing Contacts: Utilize your existing business network. Referrals from trusted contacts can be a valuable source of potential partnerships. *Local Business Associations: Join local business associations and chambers of commerce to connect with nearby businesses.

Identifying the right partners is purely driven by the outcome desired. This is typically the company's north star metric, or one that supports the north star metric. For a growth focused outcome, identifying another company that already has direct distribution of your target market - is the best bet. This has been a GTM strategy for time immemorial, and works out to be a win-win situation for both partners.

One of the fastest ways I grew my business was through partnerships. For example, I have a partnerships with payroll, HR and accounting companies. So many companies outsource their needs now. Find those companies who are ALREADY in with the business. Get THOSE companies to buy in to what you are selling. Those categories - payroll, HR, and accounting - know SO much in terms of the mindset of the CEO, the leadership team and the employees, and on various levels. Partner with them to refer you as a warm connect to show what you can do as a consultant for the business, which, upon successful outcomes, only makes the working relationship for those payroll, HR and accounting firms SO much easier.

This really depends on the industry, but what really worked for us beside the obvious ones for enterprise SaaS was referrals from customers. We learned early on that our customers had a handful of other vendors they really liked and have been working on for years. We asked for introductions to those vendors and started nurturing those connections, which ended up turning into partnership agreements that added more value to our existing customers and unlocked new sales opportunities on both ends. That was a win-win-win.

Case studies are a great way to build trust and initiate partnership conversations. They have been instrumental for us, especially when they focus on either: a. A mutual customer, or b. A customer that the partner aspires to work with. The case study should highlight the results your solution delivers. Tailoring it to demonstrate the combined potential of both your and the partner's solutions can be extremely impactful. This approach can generate interest even before you approach the said partner.

The best way to maintain those partnerships is to focus on providing constant value to both the partner and any mutual customers both companies have. Keeping them in the loop about successes based on the partnership helps keep you top of mind. Also, being proactive when an issue arises, and showing the steps you are taking to resolve and mitigate future problems, demonstrates that you are a trustworthy partner. It shows that you don't take the partnership for granted and are constantly investing in its success.

Make sure there are clear Rules of Engagement. When does the partner get compensated and how much. What type of support would they get? What types of resources do you expect them to dedicate to your business? The specific on this depends highly on what type of partners are you engaging with. Channel Partners, franchisees, contractors, strategic or technical alliances, they all require a different set of ROE.

The glue of partnership is TRUST. An old adage says: "trust grows as fast as the palm tree grows, but it falls as quickly as the coconut". Do not ever break trust, or rebuilding it will be very difficult, dragged out, and costly.
