How can you guarantee safety in workplace design?

You can never guarantee anything but to get to the goal it should include the usual risks, nest practices and so on The most relevant apsect is change management. Without the engagement, input and buy of the end users and interested parties no design will capture all scenarios, events and requirements.

I have been involved in a great Hazard identification activity in the past. The activity involved employees, management and even visitors. Any hazards in the facility shop were marked using the hazard identification tool with a painted on stencil or sticker as to their category I.E. pressure, gravity, motion, mechanical, chemical, biological, electrical, temperature, radiation or sound. This was a very helpful visual when conducting audits or looking for areas that needed improvement or corrective intervention.

One way to ensure safety in workplace and workstation design is to pre-plan hazard mitigation strategies in accordance with the Hierarchy of Controls. Elimination or substitution to address the specific hazard or hazards is the ideal, but the incorporation of engineering controls is often the most practical and efficient means of isolating the hazard from the operator (e.g., interlocks, machine guarding, mechanical ventilation). This level of planning must be a team effort that includes good communication between production, procurement, and management. Automation is another way to reduce worker exposure risk in manufacturing, but care must be taken to capture potential new hazards and build worker awareness while avoiding complacency.

Ensuring safety in workplace design involves prioritizing ergonomic principles, implementing clear emergency exit routes, providing adequate lighting, and incorporating safety features in machinery and equipment. Regular safety assessments, employee training, and compliance with industry standards are essential for maintaining a secure work environment.

When designing workplace and ensuring safety is being considered in workplace design, compliance with regulations should come first, even before assessing the risks. Reason being, regulations set that minimum safety and health requirements, which will already address the risk.

One thing I have found helpful is understanding that stakeholders are the end user, the measure, of your program. Designing a program with their experience and influence can help drive buy in and secure your culture. Program longevity is tied deeply to buy in, backed by supportive and engaged safety teammates, who do the work to ask stakeholders what they need, get to know them on a personal level, engage in learning their jobs and what their concerns are while also bolstering those concerns in the right direction. System design, systemization, implementation, process safety and hazard analysis can all be key areas where understanding what experience with those systems and processes can only be derived from stakeholder input.

When considering safety in workplace design, stakeholders involved should included those who have physical challenges. There is accessibility standard that the company can refer to when considering workplace design for those with physical challenges. And when it comes to workplace design, we should not just restrict to the environment design, e.g. office workstation, work area, common area etc. We need to consider emergency evacuation/ response in workplace design.

Establish a workplace health and safety committee made up of workers from different departments, from senior management to shop-floor-based employees. The committee should meet at least once a month and keep employees and senior management informed about safety topics, inspections, injury and illness statistics, and other safety-related issues. Similarly, hold departmental or company-wide safety meetings once a month or quarterly to solicit employee feedback. Getting regular feedback from employees is helpful because it opens managers’ eyes to potential hazards that may have gone unnoticed, lets managers know how employees are doing/feeling, and makes employees feel valued, which improves mental health and productivity.

Envolva as pessoas que irão usar e se beneficiar do local de trabalho é essencial para garantir a segurança e promover uma cultura de segurança e confiança. Isso pode ser feito através de diversas formas, como pesquisas, entrevistas, grupos focais, workshops ou sessões de co-design, onde é possível solicitar feedback, sugestões e preferências dos funcionários, gerentes, clientes, fornecedores e outras partes interessadas. Essa abordagem permite criar um design que atenda às necessidades, expectativas e valores de todos os envolvidos, aumentando assim a segurança e o bem-estar no local de trabalho.

Quando falamos em segurança do trabalho sempre precisamos pensar em quem é o usuário como vou ter compreensão desse público, quais etapas de minhas atividades são críticas e precisam de mais energia aplicada em conscientização, quais riscos e perigos quero que sejam assimilados e controlado, qual a minha capacidade de segurança como vou permitir a meus colaboradores falhas seguras.

Use color codes, posters, labels, and/or signs to warn employees of potential hazards. For example, employers can display their safety recordable using automated counters. This visual aide displays real-time data and reminds employees to stay safe. Digital signage can be incredibly helpful in emergency situations as, unlike static posters, you can use it to instantly warn or notify workers of a situation in areas where mobile phones and computers aren’t allowed. You can also use digital signage to post daily or weekly workplace “Safety Tips”, recognize employees who have demonstrated outstanding safety awareness and keep employees up to date on new rules and regulations.

Quando falamos em SST precisamos buscar sempre a evolução com caminho claro de como evoluir, segurança do trabalho não é ausência de acidentes mas sim nossa capacidade de prevenção e controle.

Para Monitorar e avaliar os resultados e impactos do projeto do local de trabalho é crucial para garantir a segurança e a saúde dos funcionários. Isso envolve coletar e analisar dados sobre indicadores como índices de acidentes, absenteísmo, rotatividade, moral, engajamento e satisfação. Ferramentas como pesquisas, auditorias, inspeções e relatórios são úteis para esse fim. Ao revisar esses dados, é possível identificar pontos fortes e fracos do design do local de trabalho, bem como oportunidades e desafios de melhoria ou inovação na segurança e saúde dos funcionários.

Para medir resultados em SST precisamos ter claro que ué estamos falando de indicadores vivos e que estão interligados a todas a etapas e processos de uma organização, essa criticidade precisa estar inserida desde profissionais de SST e líderes que trabalhem em busca da evolução do tema, a cultura da segurança, cultura do cuidado, não acaba ela não tem pausa, com frequência temas precisam ser revisitados divulgados e trabalhados em todos os níveis da organização.

A segurança seja onde for, em projetos ou indústria é essencial para proteger os funcionários e promover um ambiente saudável. Começa com a alta governança da empresa, que deve estabelecer uma cultura de segurança, definir políticas claras e alocar recursos adequados. Os líderes devem demonstrar comprometimento, seguir as diretrizes de segurança e incentivar os funcionários a fazerem o mesmo. Comunicação aberta e engajamento são importantes para relatar preocupações e melhorias. Monitorar e revisar regularmente as medidas de segurança é essencial, assim como responsabilizar violações. A governança deve estabelecer uma cultura de segurança, protegendo a saúde e bem-estar dos funcionários.
