How can you handle confidential information from peers?

Confidentiality is crucial to foster trust and create a relationship with people. It builds strong relationships, encourages communication and helps promote collaboration.

Confidentiality is essential for building trust in personal and professional relationships. When people have confidence in your ability to keep their information private, they become more inclined to share personal or intimate details with you. The depth of a relationship often grows as you gain a deeper understanding of someone through the trust built on confidentiality.

In any given field where their is risk, their is uncertainty. It’s the same as keeping secrets from others, knowledge is power and ignorance is bliss you could say.

Although difficult to break confidentiality in order to protect others, it is required. As an example, if people’s lives are in danger, you must do what’s is right to protect others and break a confidence.

Navigating the decision to breach confidentiality requires careful consideration. It is essential to consistently question the motives behind such a decision. Asking oneself, "Why do I feel compelled to break confidentiality, and how will it affect the person involved?" is crucial. If the intention is rooted in safeguarding the well-being of the individual, complying with legal obligations, or preventing harm, and the outcome ultimately leads to a positive resolution, there may be a moral obligation to proceed. Conversely, if the inclination to breach confidentiality arises from personal or selfish reasons, it is advisable to reconsider the decision.

When given information in confidence, it is fundamental respect for the individual who shared it with you to ask permission to share it. You have broken a trust is you share it without their consent.

Obtaining consent to breach someone else's confidentiality involves engaging in an open and transparent conversation. This conversation will likely be difficult. That doesn't mean it shouldnt be done. Having the conversation demonstrates your respect for the other person and gives them a chance to share possibly even more context to the information they shared previously that has you considering breaking their confidentiality.

Protecting someones information often requires one to implement the same pricipals they would follow when protecting ones own information: 1. Only write down pertinent details necessary 2. Store it somewhere physically or electronically that you can control necessary access 3. If electronic, utilize things like passwords and encryption to keep it secure 4. If physical, when you are ready to dispose of it, use a shredder or something that will render it unreadable 5. Don't talk about it openly in areas that you don't trust or can't control the surroundings (ie..coffee shop, mall, etc...)

It is essential to inform peers about what can and cannot be shared, upholding our roles' integrity and trust. Seeking explicit consent before disclosing any information is not just a legal requirement but a mark of professional respect and ethical conduct. When asked to reveal confidential information, a polite refusal or referring the matter to a supervisor is appropriate, ensuring decisions are made correctly and in line with established protocols. In summary, clear communication and steadfast respect for confidentiality boundaries are not just procedural necessities but critical components of our professional integrity and commitment to the rule of law.

Expressing boundaries in personal situations can be challenging as it's not a common practice. It starts by letting people know what you are and are not willing to accept. If you are not interested in detailed personal information, you can politely let them know by stating, "This sounds personal and I don't want to get into your personal business". This lets them know your boundary up front prior to receiving the information.
