How can you handle conflicts with your boss when seeking a promotion?

Self-evaluation and tracking are key when it comes to assessing your readiness. The end-of-year performance review may feel complex and complicated if you don't track your progress, achievements and impact. Your perception of where you stand might differ from that of your manager. Quantifying and tracking it will allow you to assess your readiness without bias.

Before approaching your boss about a promotion, take a moment to reflect on your accomplishments, skills, and contributions to the team. Consider specific examples of how you've added value to projects or exceeded expectations in your current role. In my own experience, I was able to highlight successful projects I had led, emphasizing not just the outcomes but also the leadership and initiative I demonstrated.

Once you have assessed your own performance, research the requirements and expectations of the desired role. Familiarize yourself with the skills, responsibilities, and qualifications typically associated with the position. Use this information to align your self-assessment with the expectations of the new role. Prepare a list of concrete examples that demonstrate how you meet or exceed these expectations. Call me naive, but if I have to tell my boss why I should be promoted that seems like a dead on arrival idea. If you feel unappreciated, I think trying to "sell" the idea to promote you would be counter productive. Why alert the boss to the idea that you are dissatisfied? Why put him on the spot to tell you no. Bosses have all sorts of reasons for choosing to promote one employee over another. Some frankly have nothing to do with merit. The other person might have more seniority. The boss might want to make an outside hire to avoid having to backfill behind you. It could even be that your bosses boss is making the choice and its not his decision. In short, if you have to ask why you aren't being promoted, my advice is don't.

Always Quantify your performance using Notion or some PMS tool. The Boss always has different things on their plate, so not possible for them to remember all the small details even though you might be the best! It is best to have mediation and 1:1's weekly, it's a cause of concern if you are being left out of meetings and important details, in such a case do hold your ground. It could be you are a dark horse and wanting to bring in change, in such cases please take it slow and notice if your personal aspirations bring the team down. Slowdown is the answer, take a seat back and work in tandem. Look for viable proof of your KRA"s and the target acheivement,this shall make you indispensable.

Timing is crucial when discussing a promotion. Pick a time when your boss is not overwhelmed with urgent matters and choose a private setting to ensure a focused conversation. If a company has laid off persons, I find it tough to believe they would be open to promotions or increases unless you are making major contributions/big impact on their bottom line.

It may sound silly but it pays to ask a friend or a spouse to role-play the scenario with them acting as the Boss. They should make sure you come across as firm but polite and can get to the point without talking too much which could annoy the Boss

This will keep you honest about whether your current position is a solid role or if other companies are offering more fulfilling, beneficial opportunities. It’s cliche but while the grass may seem greener, it may be worth “watering” or investing in your equity at your current organization. Some other things you can ask for in lieu of a promotion is to try to find other ways to advance your career such as attending conferences to expand your brand and network, receiving trainings to get new skills/experience or seek out opportunities to be involved in highly visible projects. These options will ensure you get something of value and that you will grow.
