For example, if you are teaching ball, don't bring in a soccer ball, but bring in a baseball or football and teach ESL students about these sports. You can also show clips of American movies like Friday Night Lights or Angels in the Outfield to cement this concept of ball by showing students in real context what the ball looks like. Finally, you can extend the activity by asking students to share their own examples of how they see the word in their everyday lives.

Discussing the plot, characters, and themes can help students understand different aspects of American culture and analyze the language, visuals, and messages conveyed in the advertisements that cultural significance of food in American society, as well as regional variations and influences from diverse immigrant communities.

The biggest flaw that people make when they teach American culture is that they skim over the fact that we are a nation founded on the genocide of Native Americans and the enslavement of Africans. I taught overseas and finally resorted to the 400 years of African American history in 1 hour lecture because there is no way to understand American culture--its obsession with freedom and land without understanding these core historical facts. I urge all teachers to do some background reading in these two areas--provide a solid lecture, and kick off with some poetry, music, and literature. You CANNOT teach 21st c. cultural studies unless you dial it back. There is no context. The problems of our time in the US are down to our colonial history.
