How can you improve the mobile payment user experience as a specialist?

Handset operators need to do more to enhance the user experience. Simply allowing a user o add their card to their wallet is not enough when many users have multiple cards. Smart rules allowing consumers to tap and go, with the payment card choice decided by the handset based on MCC code and pre set rules would be a great enhancement..

Democratise more of the visibility/traceability that is now available to Banks and FIs. The tools available to the Banks and FIs now provide unprecedented levels of transparency to the settlement chain; end-to-end tracking, hold ups, final settlement etc. Yet this is still lacking in the retail customer experience and only just feeding into the corporate customer base. "Your beneficiary will receive their funds in up to 2 hours" has been the beginning and end of the mobile banking story for years, expose more of the data and tracking that is available in an average user consumable way.

To enhance mobile payments in the U.S., it's essential to focus on simplicity and reliability. Many Americans have limited disposable income, so they prefer straightforward, hassle-free transactions. The adoption of mobile payments is slow partly because not all merchants accept them, leading to inconsistent experiences. Plus, the benefits of using mobile payments – like security and convenience – haven't been clearly communicated to most people. To increase usage, it's vital to make these systems easy to use, ensure more stores accept them, and better explain why they're beneficial.

As a specialist for mobile payment user, here is my approach. 1. Identify the past behaviour of the customer if he is not coming for the 1st time and suggest the options with high success rate and most recommended. 2. Payment options can also be suggested as per the amount of transaction. For example, CC can be suggested if amount > 5K inr 3. In Indian context UPI intent based should be pitched as the preferred option as it is the most seamless, has high success rate and lowest TAT

In my experience I have received feedbacks on the struggle of fat fingers, thus the user interface for mobile payment applications specially on a transaction level should be as minimum as possible,the size of keypad and relevant fields, spacing between two action items, etc. should be designed in a fashion that it avoids human typo errors. Similarly confirmation/ acknowledgement pop-ups should also be presented in a more clearer way. A very basic requirement but an important one which has proved to be a successful aspect for high customer engagement.

UI and UX are the broad terms we keep hearing as key functional requirements and it is more important in mobiles due to the screen size, touch sensitivity, etc. The ability to show the user the required buttons, and touchpoints without scrolling up/down or swiping from left to right is a basic necessity of simple and clear design. Further making the UI intuitive improves the user comfort and reduces friction. There is no one-size-fits-all solution, but if the basics are taken care of, the heavy lifting is done, rest is specific to the use case.

In my view it all boils down to designing a simple and intuitive UI/UX with less friction and reducing the number of steps and inputs to complete the payment. One example is the beneficiary addition for P2P transfers where the customer is prompted whether he/she wishes to add the beneficiary for future use.

This reminds me of the ITIL guiding principle to Keep it Simple and Practical. Busy designs overwhelm the user and take attention from the most important elements where data is provided and/or action is required.

An elegant, functional and humanized UX design is one of the most effective ways to improve mobile payment user experience. By letting simplicity to rule, it will make mobile payment experience more inviting and a joy to use.

It's crucial to make mobile payments convenient, fast and secure. Both customers and merchants want speed through the payments process with mobile payments can be the fastest payment methods around. Accepting a wide range of payment options will help to reach more customers and see an uptick in their loyalty long-term.

it's essential to address the diversity not only in smartphone capabilities but also in the prevalence of feature phones. Optimizing for speed and performance should consider both NFC-enabled smartphones and non-NFC feature phones. While high-end smartphones can leverage advanced features like NFC for quicker transactions, feature phones, prevalent in certain demographics, may rely on alternative methods such as USSD, voice call based transactions or SMS-based payments. Ensuring that the payment experience is streamlined across this spectrum of devices is vital for inclusivity and widespread adoption, recognizing the varying technological capabilities present in the Indian market.

In my experience, the most painful experience is when users are uncertain on what is the status of a particular payment. So, creating an ecosystem of self-healing intermediary hops to complete a payment is important for better mobile user experience (users should be able to proceed from any failure without panicking)

Be sure to offer multiple payment platform options. Some of the most important payment options to include on your app are: Credit cards, Debit cards, payPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, venmo, Stripe and other online payment platforms

for user experince ,apart from integrating with multiple payment gateways,should have an options of downloading the payemnt recipts or a snapshot options to be avilable for further reconcilation for end user or as payemnt proofs as users dont want to share there mini statemnets for payemnt proofs.

Customer centricity or enabling the customer is the key 🔑 differentiator I.e Educating the customer about the interface,process & Security. The second job needs to be done is assuring continues improvement relying on the collection of regular customer feedback.

Notification of any issues, it is important to allow the user to also be aware of the status of their payments. Many instances are users unaware of status of transactions due to restrictions. For user experience, within the roadmap of movement of funds perhaps a status bar would be helpful for updates on payments that may not be immediate.

One of the most important feature that is now slowly moving from the Delighter's of kano to Satisfiers and further into Basic Needs is "Expenditure Analysis" - Started as a moat to many payment applications like IND Money in India, Expenditure Analysis will slowly become a basic need and would live in the Payments Experience as they are the closest in terms of technical possibilities to build it for the users. With the growing financial literacy, the TAM for the feature is also very high, & what is currently an early exotic delighter, would become a basic need soon. The feature is a also very big add to the stickiness or the loyalty factor of the product this is a must have.

Issuers simply decline around 50% of mobile transactions when performed in an ATM abroad… I understand issuers are pushing towards cashless and contactless, but there are situations in which cash is welcome and wanted. Users’ needs must be taken into consideration and be respected.
