How can you improve your creativity and innovation skills in R&D?

I think innovation is a two way process. One way is of theory leading to an effect. In this case we start with a theory or a hypothesis, perform set of experiments, and if we are lucky we get an “effect” that is a new innovative scalable product or process. However there is one more way of innovation and that is we get some “effect” first and this is then correlated back to a theory. From “Eureka” to the “Viagras” of the world, it is the effect that lead to the theory and not the other way round. A true scientist is always quite watchful in keenly observing these unexpected effects. Nothing ever happens in this universe by fluke. If an effect is seen then there ought to be a cause behind it. Research & Development requires a great deal of patience, on a daily basis. Only continual perseverance & sincere efforts will get you to the place you wish to reach. Next important quality that will keep the excitement alive is, curiosity. For this one needs to ask as many questions as possible, find its answers by either self study or seeking help of your seniors/ professors or by a conducting brain storming sessions with your comrades. Lastly, data updation (i.e continuous learning) on a daily basis will really take you places!

It is very helpful to keep learning all the time whatever the circumstances...keep yourself updated and dream that you will use your knowledge one day...the more information you collect even you are not using it, one day you will find the opportunity to use it either in new idea or to solve a problem or even getting a higher position...keep working, dream, don't upset...for myself I was with out job for 1 year, I used this time to learn and learn..reading instruments manuals...and when the opportunity came i was ready and I got it...never give up

This I am telling based on my experience working as consultant, employee and also as director of the company. 1. There should be freedom for expressing creativity... 2. EQ of the R&D team must be good. 3. Need to work towards for a cause...not for just sudden financial benefits. 4. Good to be childish while working...then real creative results will be outcome....

Continuous Learning: Staying updated with the latest trends, technologies, and breakthroughs in your industry. Workshops, webinars, and conferences to expose yourself to new ideas and methodologies. Diverse Collaboration: Engaging with cross-functional teams, organizations, research institutions. Different perspectives can lead to unique solutions. Brainstorming: Brainstorming sessions lead to the generation of numerous innovative ideas. Prototype and Iterate: Creating mock-ups or prototypes of new ideas. Testing and iterating leads to improvements and refinements.

Running many series of unique experiments can help make new discoveries. It is beneficial to undertake a plethora of meaningful, informed, and diverse experiments and to review the resulting data thoroughly for patterns and anomalies. A probe into new observations can help generate novel ideas. Running these experiments can sometimes be cost-prohibitive, but this is where computing/simulation models can save time and costs.

When it comes to practicable creativity, the best experiment and prototype is The Killer Experiment, KE. KE is actually about the VUCA world and nailing then breaking the Certainties of our audiences and our own thinking, before bringing about Uncertainties, then Curiosity about new understandings, which becomes the trigger for the willingness to learn. The KE is a demonstration of the message we want to convey and are trying to get others to believe too, in a manner that takes place live in front of our audience and does so powerfully, so that belief takes place with utter conviction. Creativity and the ability to be consistently so is the precursor to being open-minded and flexible.

A good solution is like a living organism, constantly shaped by its environment. Or as Mike Tyson once said "everyone has a plan until they are punched in the mouth". Building great products, services and processes is the same. They must be exposed to the environment it's going to be used in, inorder to remove their rough edges and ensure they're fit for purpose. Make it, test it, break it and share it with as many potential user's as possible. Then get tons of feedback, good and bad. Do this over, and over. Use it to drive products, services and processes fit for purpose and to create a road map for the future. The more interactions of feedback you can get the better. But it is also likely to have diminishing returns.

A more meaningful way to position this statement may be to Seek feedback and challenge, not criticism, and this must begin from the time the Research Question is being formulated. More important than the SWOT, is getting the perspective and "acceptance" of the target audience and market. This then begins to assume that the research and new hoped-for understanding are not just for knowledge, but that the hypothesis has been developed to address a real problem. When we position our research this way, and seek the feedback and challenge from the audience and markets we do know, then the cascading effect brings in the markets we did not know about. This is the impact and importance of a relevant research question and a possible hypothesis.

MECQ is the key, Making Mistakes, Early, Cheaply, and Quickly. We cannot study mistakes, just as we cannot understand failure unless we experience it in every context, Mental, Physical. and emotional. The histories, geographies, and philosophies of the world's greatest minds, from heroes, tyrants, and the most notorious of the dark triad personalities.are all powerful guides If we do not experience mistakes and failure emotionally we are bound to repeat them. The pain, pleasure, and challenges of living with failure, success, and pain must be real enough so that we are able to translate them into creative Problem solving, and innovative solutions. There is a reason Twelve Against the Gods, is Elon Musks's greatest source of Inspiration.

To be innovative, Identify a problem which is negatively impacting the outcome, dissect to have a better understanding, come up with multiple proposals to solve it, discuss with your team about your ideas and listen to them, they might have a better one! Rank order all the proposals, come up with a prototype using the best proposal and test the hypothesis and modify if needed.

The only way to practice creativity is by testing our creativity levels with people. Open ourselves to ridicule and praise, and challenge and insults. creativity freezes in the face of fear. The best of creativity usually needs to be practiced in real-time in front of a live audience. Whatever the field may be, the audience has to be real for us to believe in our creativity enough to expose ourselves to an audience. The step-by-step sequence for practicing this is the acronym termed CUCLARRUCE. That is an article in itself, but it is the flow of practice needed to present ourselves to an audience in a powerful manner, riding completely on the prowesses of Creativity. R&D, Especially formulator or starting from the leader, for example cosmetics or skin and hair care, thinking big, smart reading the phenomena not just follow the trends, first of all we should have our own vision to make useful products not only just for beauty for short term period, but are save for daily and long time application or according to the order of the application. Start from this, research couldn't be stop motivated to find the best products, best methods and strategy.

Stay vigilant with competitor analysis and manage risks effectively. Ensure your tech infrastructure is up to par, and establish a robust intellectual property strategy.Collaborate with academia, engage with innovation ecosystems, and measure impact through KPIs. Uphold sustainability and ethics while remaining adaptable and fostering clear communication. Prepare for potential crises, all while focusing on strategic goals for a well-rounded approach.

One should have "Out Of the box thing"attitude which leads to great R&D innovative ideas / solutions. Innovative ideas should be kept confidential untill implementation and patent rights reserved.
