How can you improve your negotiation skills with stories?

In my past 22 years of Sales & Marketing and meeting one of the biggest Giants in Oil & Gas industry is always trying to meet with the agenda of not making the other feel you are here for the deal, you are there for building relationship more than the closing of deal. Establishing trust and rapport with the person infront and not letting him feel you need him or his deal is the most important way in my experience to actually close it in your way. Its a classic reverse psychology tactics.

Stories paint vivid pictures and make the point more believable. In addition, everyone loves a good story, it piques our imagination and it stays in our minds long after abstract concepts might have gone. Stories are subtly persuasive without the other person feeling intimidated or controlled. Even where there is immediate resistance, the stories continue the work after the initial negotiations and continue to reason with the other party even when there is no discussion ongoing. It fosters mind analysis. Storytelling in negotiations is definitely powerful beyond mere words!

It's not always easy to know how to negotiate effectively and for many it's a learned skill. - That's where stories come in. Stories are a great way to engage people; they help you to build trust and rapport. Stories illustrate points and make them more memorable, and assist in overcoming objections, painting a clear picture for the listener, helping to reach a mutually beneficial agreement. When telling a story make sure to be yourself, no need to imitate someone else. Be clear and concise in your story telling; as well as be prepared to answer questions. And have fun.

By presenting a narrative that appeals to the aspirations and goals of the other party, you can foster a sense of collaboration and increase the likelihood of reaching a mutually beneficial agreement.

Stories are like the cozy campfire in a conversation. They warm things up and make everything feel real. They're not just about facts; they're about sharing experiences and emotions.

I recommend starting with a blank sheet of paper. Write down what you want to get across. Don't worry about order at first, just get it all on the page. I like to physically write b/c of how my brain works but for others typing or other mediums could be better. Next, ask yourself if there are relevant links or other supporting data for your points and note them. Lastly, storyboard out the flow and order for your points with supporting data. Now you are ready to refine your narrative and turn it into the final product, whether that is a social media post, a presentation deck, a speech, etc.

When you're weaving a story, think of it like sharing a tale with a friend. Keep it real, relatable, and sprinkle in some personal touch. Remember, it's not about fancy words or corporate lingo, it's about connecting hearts and minds through your narrative.

In negotiations, clarity is key. Before crafting a compelling story, it's crucial for the communicator to understand the message to convey, such as buyer seeking a price reduction. The story must go beyond a mere concession, illustrating how the reduced price benefits both parties and sets the stage for a long-term relationship. For instance, the narrative could showcase how the adjustment not only satisfies the immediate demand but also positions the seller as an official provider, ensuring a strategic partnership that transcends the current transaction. In this way, storytelling becomes a powerful tool for persuasion, turning a transactional request into the foundation of a mutually beneficial, enduring collaboration.

Create empathy, display a story, and illustrate your perspective and the reasons behind your position. Instead of stating your demands directly, share a relevant story that highlights the challenges or needs that led to your proposal.

I recommend having a cadre of stories available for an interview or a situation. You can sometimes answer a question indirectly with a story in a much stronger way than with a direct answer. Look for opportunities to tell stories that get your point across (that you are awesome at XYX and they should hire you, that you're product is the best and they should buy it, etc.).

Think of stories as your versatile negotiation tools! To connect, share a tale that resonates with your counterpart's experiences - like finding common ground over coffee. For clarity, spotlight your perspective with a real-life example or 'what if' scenario. To persuade, paint a vivid picture of triumph or setback, illustrating the stakes involved. Facing objections? Craft a story as a sturdy bridge, showing how hurdles can be overcome. For value, share an inspiring vision story, inviting others to shape a brighter future. It's co-creating a promising tomorrow.

Practicing storytelling isn't just about learning techniques; it's an exploration of authenticity, veridic emotions, and genuine connections. While the practicality of mentorship, learning from movies, and attending seminars is invaluable, the core of storytelling lies in sincerity. A clear structure is essential, but the emotion embedded must be authentic. True connection arises when stories are not meant to deceive but to build a longlasting business relationship based on true values. To practice storytelling effectively, start by connecting from an honest place.

Storytelling is like a muscle - it gets stronger with exercise. Start small, share anecdotes with friends or even write them down. The more you flex this skill, the more captivating and natural your narratives will become.

During the negotiation use stories from your counterpart's life (business or personal, depending on the depth of your research and knowledge about them). Avoid sharing too many stories from your own life - as always, it's easier to relate to your own experience than to someone else's.

Time is the most elusive, expensive, fleeting and rare commodity we all share. Once gone, time can never be recovered. Respecting someones time (and your own) is imperative. For me, I practice 1, 2 and 5 min. stories for prospect meetings, ask for 1, 2 or 5 min of their time and promise to leave at the end of my story unless they want to continue the conversation. I'd set a timer out & based on the time they gave, finish the story, pick up the timer and extend a hand thanking them for listening. That process establishes that you are a person of your word and not going to waste the prospects time. 98% of my prospects wanted to continue the conversation and more than 1/2 became customers.

In the context of negotiation, i directly hit the emotion, relationship and future scenario. People never buy someone's products or service they buy relationship, behaviour and smartness.
