How can you network with people who have different values effectively?

The problem with flinging out a concept like Networking into the AI soup is one of definition, not of differences. We have missed out the basics, Networking 101, as it were. Many see Networking as a means of furthering their own purposes, others a way to meet new or interesting people, or get a freebie skydiving trip. It is not necessarily the means whereby you glue disparate souls into an effective working group. My only experience of that was being dropped into an NGO of around 140 odd mainly under 35 year olds drawn from all five corners of race, religion, gender, experience, and age. Soon found what united our many differences best was not Networking, but sharing the common Human Rights purpose, that plus listening.

I've always had trouble with the word "networking". While a quick way for people to understand the action, it's impersonal. This is an activity involving person to person or person to community. I prefer the word "connecting". Connecting is 'relational', while 'networking' is transactional. It's been said that how we speak affects how we're perceived. How do you 'connect' in a personal way? By noticing ideas or actions taken by the person you're reaching out to; e.g. an article, project, recent success, a new certification. Reaching out with this in mind greatly increases the chances of a reply, even a 'no, thank you. I've had the nicest 'rejection' replies all due to connecting in a personal way. Everyone wants to be acknowledged.

One thing I have found helpful is to be genuine and intentional for appreciating cultural differences, political dispositions and embracing the person for who he/she is among other. Take the time to put yourself in the recipient's shoes and evaluate how is the information you are communicating coming across. Remember we are living and working in different times, so it's imperative to think about perception, especially if one's actions and/or words can be misconstrued. Honestly, showing respect and discourse is not complicated nor should verbiage that make others feel uncomfortable. As a leader, I always think if my approach will adversely effect others, if so..then I should reevaluate to ensure respect is optimized.

Enter a networking experience with a non-judgmental mindset. If the interaction works out well, fantastic. If not, move forward accordingly. Networking by identifying common can bring major success for everyone involved, creating win-win-win scenarios, not only for those on the receiving end, for ourselves, and for the group at large.

Here are my thoughts: 1) Transparency is Key: Start by being open and transparent about your own values and beliefs. Express your willingness to engage in conversations with people who hold different viewpoints. 2) Empathetic Listening: When engaging with individuals who may have different values, actively listen to what they have to say. Be genuinely interested in their perspective. Ask questions to understand their background and experiences that have shaped their values. And 3) acknowledge Differences: In your conversations, acknowledge that you may have differing values and that it's perfectly okay. Expressing this acceptance is important, as it sets the stage for a more open and productive exchange.

Expanding one’s personal network is more important than ever. In today's global workforce climate, networking can help us achieve a rapid bounce back from layoffs through professional networking and extending a helping hand. LinkedIn is the ideal platform to connect with others and achieve that goal.

It's important to approach these interactions with openness, respect, and tact while maintaining your boundaries: 1. Understand your core values and non-negotiables. 2. Establish open-minded dialogue with active listening & empathy. Always bring a multicultural lens into your interactions. 3. Communicate boundaries with transparency. 4. Establish consistent rules & consequences so people know what to expect from you. Plan how to express when your boundaries are crossed. 5. Regularly reassess your networking relationships. to make sure there is a balanced give and take. Networking across different values requires a carefully navigated balance between open-mindedness and personal integrity.

I recommend making networking a fun experience by identifying a common goal like paying it forward. Giving back can be more beneficial than we think. Opportunities may arise through the gift of giving. People may recognize our potential for an existing goal when we just show up and pay it forward. Remember, the college undergrad that you helped years ago will remember the impact you provided them then and this will pay major dividends in the long-run.

Networking us imp for a few reasons. Allows you to stay curious and always learn. Allows you to expand your horizon through others experiences and beliefs. Allows you to push your own boundaries. You can’t be an inclusive leader if you only network with people with similar beliefs and backgrounds. Push yourself to meet people from different socioeconomic backgrounds, with different political or religious beliefs than yourself. This will help reaffirm your beliefs but also make you a more aware leader.
