1 Choose the right database type

The first step to optimize your data model is to choose the right type of database for your inventory data. There are different types of databases, such as relational, non-relational, and hybrid. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages, depending on the volume, variety, and velocity of your data. For example, relational databases are good for structured and consistent data, but they may not scale well for large or complex data. Non-relational databases are good for flexible and dynamic data, but they may not support complex queries or transactions. Hybrid databases combine the best of both worlds, but they may require more maintenance and integration. You should evaluate your data requirements and choose the database type that best suits your needs.

2 Normalize your data

To optimize your data model, the next step is to normalize your data. Normalization is the process of organizing your data into tables and columns that minimize redundancy and dependency, which helps you avoid data anomalies, such as duplication, inconsistency, and loss. It also improves data integrity, security, and quality. When normalizing your data, it's important to divide it into logical and meaningful entities such as products, suppliers, customers, etc., assign a primary key to each entity (a unique identifier that distinguishes each record), eliminate any repeating groups or columns that store the same information in multiple places, and eliminate any partial or transitive dependencies (when a column depends on only part of the primary key or another column that is not part of the primary key).

The third step to optimize your data model is indexing, which is the process of creating and maintaining structures that help you find and access your data faster. It can speed up queries, especially when dealing with large or complex data sets, as well as sorting, filtering, and grouping. To achieve this, you should create indexes on the columns you frequently use in your queries such as primary keys, foreign keys, and search criteria. Additionally, choose the right type of index for your data; clustered, non-clustered, or composite. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages depending on the size, order, and distribution of your data. It’s important to be mindful of creating too many or too few indexes; the former can slow down data insertion, update, and deletion operations due to storage and maintenance requirements while the latter can slow down data retrieval and analysis operations due to scanning and filtering.
