How can you prepare for self-employment as a freelancer?

Starting a freelance business requires dedication, discipline, and a strong work ethic. It's essential to be proactive in marketing your services, managing your finances, and continuously improving your skills. As you gain experience and build a strong client base, self-employment as a freelancer can be a rewarding and sustainable career choice.

To prepare for self-employment as a freelancer, start by defining your niche and identifying your target market. Develop a strong portfolio showcasing your best work and gather testimonials from previous clients. Set up a professional online presence through a website or social media to promote your services. Familiarize yourself with invoicing, budgeting, and tax obligations, and consider setting up a separate bank account for business transactions. Finally, network with other freelancers and stay updated on industry trends to remain competitive and continuously improve your skills.

Understanding your value is like having a guiding light in the freelancing world. It's essential because it serves as the compass for your rates, pitches, and negotiations. In freelancing, you are your product, and your value proposition is your unique selling point. It's not just about what you do; it's about how you do it differently and better. Knowing your value helps you confidently communicate your worth to potential clients and set fair rates that reflect your expertise. Ultimately, your success in self-employment hinges on the ability to convey what makes you exceptional. It's the foundation for attracting clients and avoiding common pitfalls, ensuring a thriving freelancing career.

The whole thing depends on your deep understanding of Business Models. It is important at this stage to differentiate between two important terms Strategy and Business Models. This is key as it important to have your entrepreneurial journey cemented and deeply rooted in making "value" a big area of your research. One of the reasons many businesses fail is focusing on strategies without really understanding the ideology or philosophy behind their concept and the approaches needed to generate value, or capturing it in the long term.

Es muss aber auch nicht immer die klassische Schule der Vorbereitung sein. Oft reicht auch einfach da zu sein, sein Expertenwissen gut darzustellen und den Nutzen des Kundens klar zu kommunizieren. Aus meiner Sicht ebenso hilfreich bzw. notwendig ist ein gutes Netzwerk. Hat man dies selber nicht, lohnt es sich organisierten Netzwerken beizutreten und dort aktiv zu sein. Hier sei allerdings gesagt: Augen auf bei der Netzwerkwahl - genau darauf achten wo eure Kunden oder auch Fürsprecher sind. Dort muss man mitmachen im Netzwerk!

A portfolio is one silently overlooked but important document in your freelance career. I say a portfolio is like the guiding hand for your potential clients/employers as it showcases your skills and speaks about your abilities when you are not in the room. And whenever you submit a portfolio, always know that you have sent it on an errand. For this reason, I train and teach newbie freelancers and aspiring VAs how to create and package a winning portfolio. I created free and paid resources to guide any newbie who is confused about how to get started.

A freelance career can be quite rewarding if it's done right. First, you need to know realistically what are the services you can offer as well as who your potential clients could be. You also have to submit to a continous-learning regimen so that you can diversify your knowledge base. You also need to be an active participant in conferences and seminars, occassions that allow you to be out there to expand your networking efforts. In my experience, most of my clients have come about through word of mouth marketing that's why its important to be an active participant in trade and social media platforms. Finally, you need to become an expert on the legal, accounting, financial, and tax-related obligations that come with work independence.

A portfolio is absolutely necessary. Any leads on how to do this attractively? I have my CV but this might be a bit dry to go through...

This one is tricky cuz it’s a catch 22 when you don’t have a portfolio. That’s why you gotta offer your first 3-5 clients either a barter based service or completely free one in exchange for recommendations to their network. That’s how you kick off your services.

Portfolio is the poster that gives a client a quick idea of one’s expertise and experience. It should have all relevant details in a neat and crisply worded format.

Start saving. Have at least 6 months of monthly expenses lying in your bank account & 3 months worth of salary as emergency funds. It sounds simple, but it really is not. Don't just quit your job- be realistic. As someone who has worked with 40+ freelancers, I can vouch for one thing- networking early on matter a lot- try to understand what your future customer wants. Start taking feedbacks early on and fine tune your service. Don't fall on fancy tools a simple google sheet to track every finance helps. Do this for 6-12 months before you quit your job.

This is where most get in trouble. Live like poppers and save up 5-7 years for personal expenses as if you were unemployed before pulling the plug. Alternatively, have one member of the household earning enough to carry the home plus an additional 20% of disposable income which can be saved for feeding into the company. The thing that most people miss in starting a new business is that their idea may be spectacular - but the trouble is getting your name and reputation out there. It's marketing. If you build it, they don't necessarily come unless they know about what you built. And, your product had be so unique that you don't end up in a price war with the established other companies that provide the product or service.

The reality is inflation and wage stagnation mean self employment and entrepreneurship now are required for many people to provide for themselves and their families. Record numbers of new businesses - many of them online microbusinesses - have been started in recent years. The good news is, the barrier to entry for self employment is lower than its ever been. Understand where you are today and where you want to need to be to reach your financial goals. Build a habit of analyzing your personal finances and collecting market data relevant to your business. Use data to make decisions about your business to moderate risk for personal finances.

Understand the changes from a tax perspective. Work with an accountant to get yourself set up, know what you need to track, what you can write off, and how much you should be setting aside. Getting ahead of this makes tax time much less stressful, and sets you up to take advantage of any tax benefits.

The nice thing about having a 9-5 job is that it offers structure. When you work for yourself, structure and work/life balance is all up to you. Make sure to plan out your goals, day-to-day tasks, and standard operating procedures as you go. This can look like thinking aloud about what you want to accomplish and then working backwards from there to build out what key performance indicators will look like, short-term goals that lead to your bigger goals and of course, accountability structures to keep you on track.

The best advice I can give to people is learn how to delegate and make sure the vision of the company is communicated clearly to the staff. That way, should something happen and you need a break, you know full well that the company is running as you have designed it to. The perks of being a business owner is you get to decide what your work life balance looks like. Having the system in place for the company to run without your presence is the best way to achieve the best of both worlds.

A freelancer must be ready to work at any hour of any day. To do this, he must have a clear understanding of *the timings and methods of each phase of work*. The modern professional must know how to use *semi-automatic or automatic tools or services accessible even from smartphones* to simplify work phases with minimal loss of final quality. A *detailed calendar* must always be updated and well present in mind. When the professional is asked to coordinate a group, *project management software* is necessary for him and useful to group members. But more than the software detail, in coordinating, a certain set of *soft skills: humility and kind-heartedness* are worth more than leadership, essential only if you have to choose the group.

Embrace the flexibility of freelancing while maintaining discipline and organization. Craft a routine conducive to productivity and motivation, setting working hours, goals, and deadlines. Balance work and life, sidestepping distractions, burnout, and isolation. Employ tools like calendars and project management software for efficient task planning.

When you prepare to become self-employed, networking will need to become a daily or weekly part of your routine. LinkedIn is a great place to start connecting with groups of people like yourself, and past employers, and schools. Look in to joining some local groups where you can meet others in your community and let them know what you do! Volunteering is another great way to meet people and get referrals and feel good while doing it!

Get into contact with other freelancers. You can build a strong network and help out each other. You might see them as concurrent, but that is wrong.

In my experience, it was helpful over time to write down the services I could provide, cut those in half, cut in half again...finally, I whittled down to three services that were very clear for the industry teams to understand the scope, costs, expected outcomes, and deliverables. If you try to offer too much, there is a risk of the Clients not clearly understanding what you do. I have also found that a "standardized" and straightforward master services agreement (MSA) coupled with adding short (1-2 page) appendices for each project has worked well. Trying to keep it simple has been a mantra for years, and for me, starting this way could have saved some missteps.

You need to be fairly active in the market - You need to see which skill is the most demanded by employers and see if you think you can learn that skill to stay competitive.

Embrace freelancing as a continuous learning journey, necessitating constant adaptation and improvement. Stay abreast of industry trends, demands, and changes, while acquiring new skills, tools, and techniques to bolster value and performance. Solicit feedback, assess outcomes, and pinpoint strengths and weaknesses. This commitment to growth ensures competitiveness, relevance, and personal satisfaction in the freelance landscape.

Don't underestimate the value of taking courses/webinars in areas where you are already an "expert." There are a lot of opportunities to be found by paying attention to the questions attendees are asking, and you have a direct connection to people who are identifying as interested.

As a freelancer/entrepreneur, while building a business plan, networking, pricing are important, most don't know about these: 1) Be prepared to go through the dip: While you start the journey with all enthusiasm, it's difficult to keep going in the face of failures/rejections. Having a strong "WHY" and remembering it in difficult times is crucial. 2) Invest in yourself: invest in books, courses and coaches. Instead of DIY all the time, take help of experts who can show you the way. 3) Plan for self-care: most freelancers/ solopreneurs/ entrepreneurs I coach face burn out because they don't prioritize self-care. It's essential to devote time to exercise, proper nutrition, and adequate sleep.

Start gradually, start for free and make a portfolio because no matter how great you say you are but you will get the work only when you show them you have done it before as well. This gives them the trust that you can handle their work as well. Don't just leave everything do with a job, find time after your work hours because initially you might not know when you will get your first client and not having money for long time will not help you to continue it. Understand that it will take time so be patient.

Join network and other fractional/freelance groups to get support. Don’t do it all alone. Use the people you know and/or find some new & useful folk!

Networking doesn't end after you wave goodbye. To solidify the connections you have made, it is helpful to have a follow-up strategy in place. One basic but highly effective action is to connect with people on LinkedIn. It is a quick and informal way to stay in touch and nurture your relationships over time. Additionally, sending a short, personalised message after meeting someone can serve as a thoughtful gesture and a reminder of your interaction. (It also helps you with remembering where you met them!) You can consider offering to set up a chat for more in-depth conversations.

It's important to learn from others who have gone through simular business ventures as you but know that you can never learn everything you need to learn from someone else. Everyone's journey is different and unique to them. So you should be willing to take the first step, acknowledge you don't know it all and be willing to learn and adapt as you navigate your individual business journey.
