How can you promote self-directed learning in elementary school students?

It is important to get students involved in setting achievable and realistic goals that aligns with the curriculum objectives per time. When they take ownership of their learning style, interests and pace they are more conscious of the responsibilities that comes with it and it becomes easier to level up faster with better results as proof. In all of these process, the teacher should help set the ball rolling, check up the them at intervals to make sure they are still on track and provide Mentorship and support when needed.

Self Directed Learning is achievable when you set goal oriented examples to guide the learner through the process to achieve the desired or exceptional result.

In my experience, students aged 9-11 are often already used to surrendering their autonomy. Their learning is often a passive process, shaped by the imperatives of a dysfunctional education system. Introducing choice and collaboration should itself be explained with the children, acknowledging explicitly the difficulty they may face, as learners who have been made dependent. “When we make our own choices in a team, we need to have the confidence to go our own way but also develop the skill of listening to our team-mates. It’s about balance.” We should not presume that because freedom is the natural state of being for kids, they don’t need many help harnessing it.

There can be various means, alternatives, formats or paths to achieving the same result. Each learner can be provided with available alternatives for them to choose the most applicable and appropriate for them in achieving the specific task. We are all wired differently. Flexibility is key.

Conduct seminars and workshops on chosen topics and make students responsible to organize and conduct seminars and workshops by guiding them. Make sure all students equally participate by assigning them group (creating a group would be tricky if not taken care). Encourage students to ask questions to presenters and to the groups.

Additionally, I integrate technology tools and resources that support self-directed learning, such as educational apps or online research platforms, empowering students to explore and discover knowledge independently while still fostering collaboration and communication within the classroom.

SDL does not mean that students are isolated from their peers or teachers. You can foster collaboration and communication among students by creating opportunities for them to work together, share their ideas, give and receive feedback, and learn from each other. You can use cooperative learning structures, such as jigsaw, think-pair-share, or peer tutoring, to facilitate peer interaction and mutual support. You can also provide regular and constructive feedback to students, as well as invite them to ask questions, express their opinions, or seek help when needed.

Make tasks in such a way, that they can identify if they are doing it right or wrong. For example, in numerical exercises, give the answer and just evaluate the process. In that way if they don’t get the answer they will know they’re doing something wrong and ask for support immediately and not until you check the task. But if they’re doing it right they will get immediate feedback that will give self-confidence in what they’re doing and invite them to keep working. Activities like the ones in scape rooms are great for this, since let them know if they are advancing and identify if they need help or are doing it right.

Reward system can also serve as impetus, encouragement as well as motivation to achieve a set goal. When learners are aware of possible reward for getting things done, it can become the reason for not giving up in the face of seeming failure.

Guarantee fast feedback on their work. This will guide them to identify their strengths and weaknesses and keep engaged with the work.
