How can you promote servant leadership in hospitality teams?

Understanding that service isn’t only important to your guests but also your people is key! You need to get a handle on your self awareness and identify which of your habits are inconsistent with servant leadership, but also still be prepared to flex between the various styles when needed.

First time i got to know about Servant Leadership is when i was working for Walmart. Senior Leaders from Walmart US were really following the same. I was really enthralled to see their Leadership style. It started nurturing my Leadership Journey and gave me confidence on my Servant Leadership style. I truly believe as a Leader , you have to serve your teams needs and help them to achieve their best . In doing so , you will always win more than expected.

As a Leader it really essential to communicate Company's Vision and Values. This will help the team to align to bigger purpose. Leading by example and living by the Values of the company is more critical. As senior Leaders we are observed and we set clear examples by the way we behave.

Most critical part of Leadership is Empowerment. Allow team to take decisions and as a Servant Leaders we should support them to do so. This act of empowerment may be time consuming initially but over a period of time you would have created more able Leaders in the organization who will contribute to your success.

Don't miss any opportunity to appreciate or reward your team members. This will create more positivity among the team. Giving due credit to their efforts and putting them in the front shows your true Leadership quality.

Fostering a culture of servant leadership begins with the humility to serve your team. Your willingness to make their needs a priority will make a bigger impression than anything you say. Learn what challenges your people are facing and find ways to provide support, even if that can only be encouragement. If your team thinks they are simply a small cog in a big machine, or they think you do not practice what you preach, then you will not be able to connect with them and motivate them to serve others. You can always find ways to model this behavior for your team - pick up trash, open a door, jump start a car with a dead battery. You must first invest your time in your people before you can expect them to lead with a servant's heart.

Learning and growing is a new norm . This will help you as well as organization. But as a Senior you should also encourage the same with your colleagues and team members. You should create the culture of Learning and Sharing

Based on the cultural propensity of individuals towards masculine values (emphasising assertiveness, competition, and achievement) or feminine values (prioritising cooperation, modesty, and quality of life), servant leaders need to adapt their leadership styles, motivational strategies, and work values. This would be more crucial, particularly in the early stages of a relationship when the leader's acceptability has not yet been established. Once this is accomplished, leaders are progressively welcomed for their opinions and direction regarding broad principles.
