How can you support student-led research and inquiry?

Students should be given freedom to engage with experiments during their classroom teaching. Also during their leisure time such as school holidays we can encourage students to engage with research work. As well as we can organize exhibitions and competitions at school level on annual basis to encourage students to exhibit their research work and accordingly we can reward and recognize them.

Like all endeavours, the clearer the criteria / benchmark for success at inception, the more likely that the project will be focused, coherent, rationalised and, ultimately, successful. It's mighty difficult to aim and reach for a target if we don't have a clear conception of what or where that target is: student-led research really is no different!

STUDENT VOICE Listening to your cohort of students is imperative in any context. In my experience, establishing a student voice board will help guide leadership teachers, deputy principals and principals to have a better understanding of their students. These students should be from all backgrounds within the school setting. This is not a student council ! This is the student voice ! To gain the best results it is important to include - students from diverse backgrounds - students with high and low academic achievement -student with learning difficulties and disabilities - Students with behavioural difficulties From there , the students will conduct research from their peers and inquire about key issues and topics to gain insight

Defining purpose and scope sets a solid foundation for student-led research. By clearly outlining learning goals, aligning with curriculum standards, and connecting to students' interests, we empower them to take ownership of their learning journey. I've seen transformative results when students explored environmental issues aligned with science standards, sparking a passion for sustainability and critical thinking.

I believe that the quality of any project outcomes depends on the engagement of the students. Holding students accountable for their work and results is key to their engagement. Teachers should be facilitating students work rather than being the stars of the show. Teachers can be the source of support while students are thriving to succeed in the project that they chose.

In some cases, such as with the EPQ and the IB’s Extended Essay & TOK lessons, this is already in situ to some degree. However, it’s a journey, not a destination!

Vital benefits of student-led research and inquiry is that it allows them to have choice, helps them to apply the concepts and strengthen thier fundamentals. Mere classroom lectures seldom suffice the demands/expectations of the real world. Institutions should come up with robust curriculum, flexibility, focus on learning outcomes. Student led research and inquiry will become a flagship unit when HEI's motivate students with needed resources and support. They need to be given opportunities where their interest /skill lies and it is all the more e important is to acknowledge their contribution. This helps to build a community that is solution oriented !

One thing that has really worked for me on increasing student research and inquiry especially on the competency based curriculum is celebrating the processes. In project based learning for example; there are many processes from identifying the challenges to problem solving, design and prototyping to presentation. Some project outcomes don't necessarily meet expectations that is some approach expectations and others well below expectations as per assessment standards. However, as a teacher-leader I have always celebrated the learner's journey to get to their final presentation regardless of the assessment report. This definitely builds on their inquiry-based learning and research on extended activities.

Celebrating student success is also motivating for students young and old! It will help them to gain confidence and motivate to do more. There are several ways of celebrating Students success such as- 1. Verbal Praise 2. Write Note 3. Send a Note/Email/Text to a Parent or Guardian 4. Class Incentives/Celebrations 5. Peer Recognition Activity 6. Teacher's Assistant for the Day 7. Displaying students Work 8. Hold an Award Ceremony 9. On-Screen Success or Sharing Socially 10. Certificate of Achievement

It's always worth being mindful of the shift in power that is imperative in classrooms expected to move to student-led inquiry. Some more traditional teachers struggle with the idea of teaching as facilitation of learning opportunities rather than bestowing knowledge on passive minds. We need to challenge teachers to reframe their thinking about their expertise in order to hook children's curiosity. More work for teachers at the start, for more pay-offs in learning at the end.
