How can you use aerial photography and drones to scout locations for video production?

Above all, using a drone for location scouting (where possible, because you just can't fly a drone wherever you like...!) is a super time saver. Drones provide a different perspective of a location than you would obtain on the ground, and a scenery can look very different from the air than from the ground. Things to consider also include the area to be covered and how much detail to capture, the quality of the photography and the necessary resolution of the images, and the available budget for this activity.

Ensure that the equipment planned for review of the drone footage accepts the file format used by the drone or has the capability to convert it as needed.

This is a tricky question because rules change from country to country, and sometimes from state to state. But drone manufacturers are fairly aware, and make drones that don't need approval or registration as well as the bigger ones that do. So if you don't want to get a liscence and permits, then make sure you use a drone which is classified as an amateur drone that can fly without permission over most locations (but not all!).

However, DO NOT underestimate using a drone. It's not as simple as it looks, and requires a bit of practice before you go around using it for location surveys. Remember, it is ILLEGAL in certain places, so get information BEFORE you fly your drone. Otherwise you might find yourself paying a hefty fine, or even worse, find youself in jail because you didn't realize that you were flying over a military zone or a protected area. So be careful!

It may not be very efficient to use drones to scout locations initially. Better to contact the local film commission for any such recommendations. But a drone certainly could make surveying a prospective location quicker and more efficient. However, do consider the cautions offered by @Joseph Edward Rozzo regarding legality and other regulatory and liability issues before launching a drone. Also, ensure it is piloted by a capable and suitably trained individual.
