How can you use humor to build rapport with new contacts at a conference?

Something that I always find helpful is to share a personal experience with the audience. I find that people warm up easily when they can relate on a human level. The key is to keep it short, sweet, simple and of course clean with a little sprinkle of humor. Another way that I use in my workshops to break the ice is to start of with a little fun game and get the audience involved. The key is to push people to participate but don't push them too hard. If someone is shy or hesitant let them be and move on to the next person. Always remember to be courteous and kind.

To specifically talk about this, I may firstly want you to note that there is difference between "Speech Audience" and "Training Audience" attitude, focus and/or driving force. I have been a trainer in diverse setting for various trainees background and found that knowing your Audience can't just go with research or just reading their bio. This can help you only to know how digestible your subject will flow for particular group general experience. Know your Audience goes with understanding their full expectations on specific subject you will be facilitating. You can use random check-in, or note and post it technique to gather audience expectations. It's not a good idea to send a pre-session survey with this purpose.

You cannot go wrong by being yourself; people are very aware if you are struggling with the subject; so I would encourage you to not get out of your dept and just enjoy the journey If you are at peace so will those who listen to you will also be peaceful terry

Laughter is like a medicine, in the appropriate situation, it can prove valuable-for example: - When you do something embarrassing, sometimes laughing at yourself can bring some degree of comfort to the shame - Surprising a Co-worker with something funny, you know they would enjoy- all involved will get a kick out of it - Find someone you can be silly with (yes, I know we can take things too seriously) from time to time we need the liberty to be silly to kinda balance things out. There have been times, people close to me had to check me about how serious I was. I also had a person approach me saying there were times they wondered is it ok if they could approach me. Using moderate humor, can break the unnecessary official boundaries between different stakeholders and encourage them to contribute more fruitfully.

"You are you of you only" thought you tend to feel the same like them in all scenarios. Having fun and being ourselves isn't something we learn from school or skills we can get from experience, instead it's an awareness which instill into us the ability to convey specific information using storytelling or fun facts. Everything might be relevant to the subject being discussed. You also need to avoid blowing others minds or offending any of the group intentionally or unintentionally. Make everything personal when it is aligned with your value, goal and learn to easily welcome different preferences even if it may require your contribution, react positively.
