One of the best starters is to use self deprecating jokes but in a completely different context. For example if you are a CEO don’t do jokes on how you are unable to manage time and bandwidth of your employees. Instead talk about how you did poorly in your piano classes. Something that gives audience a vulnerable side of yours to connect with you at a human level. They will relate to you and follow you on your journey as well as loyal engaged audience.

Knowledge and information are mostly "better told" and "more remembered" if they are embedded smartly in short stories and examples from daily life. And especially if these stories and examples make the listener "smile", they will most probably remain longer in his/her memory. If you want your audience to listen to you more carefully, don't try to fill their brain with just theoretical information, but try to tell them something they can be a part of or find a piece of themselves in it. If the listener enjoys what he/she hears, then you will be one step closer to convey the message of your speech.
