In soft clays where stone columns cannot be effective, a good alternative is Geosynthetic Encased Columns also abbreviated as GEC or GESC (Geosynthetic Encased Stone Column). Here the necessary confinement that cannot be provided by the soft clay is provided by the tensile strength of the geosynthetic encasement. As a matter of fact, though the additional cost of the geosynthetic encasement, the total solution can be much cheaper compared to ordinary stone columns, because the rigidity of the GECs are much higher and hence the number of columns required per unit surface area are much less.

It may be appropriate to design pre-loading filling with stone columns in order to shorten the consolidation time to start the road pavement during the planned construction period.

I agree100%- GECs are a very underrated and mis-understood concept. They offer huge time and cost benefits in the right ground conditions- where it’s just too soft for Stone Columns.
