How can you use volume indicators to identify trends in different markets?

In my trading experience, using On-balance volume (OBV) has been a game-changer. I remember a specific instance when I was analyzing a stock that seemed to be in an uptrend based on price movements. However, when I looked at the OBV, it was relatively flat, indicating that the volume wasn't supporting the price movement. This discrepancy made me dig deeper, and I found that there was a divergence between price and OBV. While the price was showing higher highs, the OBV was not confirming this trend. This was a clear signal for me to be cautious, as it could indicate a potential trend reversal.

Volume indicators are crucial for identifying market trends. High volume during price uptrends indicates strong buying interest, confirming bullish trends. Conversely, in downtrends, high volume suggests strong selling pressure, affirming bearish trends. Comparing current volume to historical averages provides insight into market sentiment and potential trend reversals. Volume divergence, where price moves opposite to volume, signals potential trend shifts. Thus, analyzing volume alongside price action helps traders gauge market direction and make informed decisions.

I advise against using indicators on spot charts because the volume data on spot charts can be unreliable or unclear. Instead, it's more beneficial to analyze volume data from futures charts, where the actual volume is more accurately represented. Most brokers and charting tools provide a basic volume indicator that can be applied to futures charts. By manually backtesting this approach, you'll discover that relying solely on volume indicators doesn't always yield consistent results.

One can use volume to confirm the validity of price trends with increasing volume supporting the continuation of the trend and decreasing volume signaling potential reversals. Volume divergence, where volume does not align with price movements can indicate weakness in the trend and potential trend changes. Volume breakouts marked by surges in trading volume often signal the beginning of new trends or continuation of existing ones. Also analyze volume patterns such as spikes or moving averages to gain insights into market sentiment and trend strength. By combining volume analysis with price action and other technical indicators, one can make more informed decisions and better navigate the complexities of the financial markets.

In my personal observation, volume analysis such as On-Balance Volume (OBV) is based on the principle that volume precedes price movements. I use VWAP for a security to assess long opportunities along-with other technical indicators and most importantly price-action on a particular day, especially after an event such as earnings or a news affecting the security. As a rule, I do not get long if price-action/trend is not consistently above VWAP. But I am re-evaluating this rule because I was loosing long opportunities for securities trading below VWAP and longer trends when security trades way below VWAP and then breaks VWAP into a much longer trends. For e.g. early trading hours security might bounce-off from below VWAP at previous day's low as the resistance level and trades way above VWAP. I was missing out on these trades.

Just to share, VWAP is normally plotted as a line on an intraday chart, representing the average price at which the security has traded throughout the day up to the current point in time. Traders often compare the current price of the security to its VWAP to assess whether it is trading above or below the average price. This comparison can provide insights into whether the security is overvalued(premium) or undervalued(discount) relative to the average price observed during the trading session. I plan to start incorporating CMF as one of the indicators in my trading process. I just did a quick check of CMF for stocks like SMCI, TSLA, BA etc. It aligns well with the price trend on 1Y charts. But on intra-day charts with the default setting of '21' it does not always correctly indicate the trend. For e.g. today's RDDT chart, CMF shows money is out of the security indicating the bearish trend but price-action indicated a very strong bullish trend. Perhaps, I have to play with the default setting of 21.

A positive CMF indicates buying pressure and confirms an uptrend, while a negative CMF indicates selling pressure and confirms a downtrend.

According to me, Volume indicators are helpful for confirming trends, spotting early reversals, analyzing market sentiment, confirming breakouts, identifying accumulation or distribution phases, conducting comparative analysis, and confirming price patterns. They provide valuable insights for traders to make informed decisions and anticipate market movements.

Volume Profile displays the volume traded at each price level over a certain period. In an uptrend, if the volume profile shows higher volume at price levels that correspond to higher prices, it suggests strong buying interest and supports the uptrend. In a downtrend, if the volume profile shows higher volume at price levels that correspond to lower prices, it suggests strong selling interest and reinforces the downtrend.

Volume profile is highly recommended if you’re trading off footprint charts but if you’re using candlesticks to trade you really don’t need it pure price action and market structure is the only thing you need

Volume Profile is great for intraday analysis. You can see which side is stronger, bulls or bears. The longest part of the profile is called "Point of Control (POC). A strong move above POC is bullish. A strong move below is bearish. Price holding at POC indicates support/resistance.

Be it buying or selling at crucial support or resistance points on chart. Volume helps in confirming the trend and take trades accordingly.

Volume indicators play a crucial role in assessing market trends and potential reversals. What else to consider? 1) Accumulation/Distribution (A/D) tracks the flow of money into or out of a security. Rising A/D confirms accumulation (buying), while falling A/D indicates distribution (selling). Use A/D to validate trend strength. 2) Ease of Movement considers both price change and volume. A rising Ease of Movement suggests upward momentum, while a falling indicator indicates weakness. Monitor Ease of Movement for trend confirmation. Understanding relative volume is crucial in trading. Most traditional platforms may not offer this indicator, but it can be created using a script. Average volume is also useful, but be mindful that volume is often artificially high due to what I term 'faciliatory transactions'—broker and dealer activities to complete client orders. It's also important to consider 'self-dealing,' where traders meet their own bids and asks. While not commonly available on many trading platforms, transaction volume (rather than share count) is a valuable indicator. Finally, comparing morning volume to that of the same interval slot on previous days offers additional insights

In my experience, RSI Identifies overbought/oversold conditions, trend reversals, and price-momentum divergences. MACD : Confirms trends, detects momentum shifts, and signals potential trend changes. EMA: Smooths price data, identifies trend direction, and signals entry/exit points. I use 20,50,100 and 200 EMA as per my investment strategy.

Volume is a great indication in the strength on any given trend. It’s useful as it provides insights as to how many transactions are being made around a certain price point which is useful with identifying points to either enter, exit or alter your exposure. As it can be mentally taxing entering a position and all of a sudden we don’t see much movement in any direction. Volume also serves as a great indicator of what’s to come - Trading is all about spotting opportunities and what better way to do that than following the money. There’s ALWAYS a reason and someone will always know. Get used to looking for sectors that are experiencing increased volume or identifying individual names where the sentiment is changing
