How can you write a compelling story for different platforms?

In order to be able to write compelling stories for different platforms, you have to first know your platform. This is because different platforms have different function and purpose. If you are writing a novel, you could publish your own book. This is because you can write long stories if it's your own book. If you are writing stories to promote something, you should then use social media instead. This is so that a wide range of people can view your story.

The hard part, the damndest hardest part is not telling you story or tailoring it for multiple platforms. It's in the telling first a compelling story, one that has a beginning, meaning, a middle and an end. Forget most shows on television, most songs and movies as those don't depend upon writing, and the results of that are in and they're not good. You must dig deep and write before then considering what platform you might throw the writing at...and take the hits when you discover there are a billion 'writers' out there also submitting, most of it crap but clogging up the passages to get published in any way. If you can't think of a story then drop your pen and go get some more life experience and then come back.

Layering is crucial. Understand the layers in what you are writing, how each builds up and which could work on different platforms. The story might need a video element. It might need someone to speak about it. Aspects or ideas might work in shorter form on social media, where you can also test them. It's harder than ever to just drop it once in once place and expect your message to land, to travel, and to mean something. Look at the layers.

The first sentence of that entry says it all: "Vigorous writing is concise." Getting to the point, clearly and directly, respects your readers' time and intelligence. No. Here's the Rule 17 entry again: "This requires not that the writer make all his sentences short, or that he avoid all detail and treat his subjects only in outline, but that every word tell."

Never compromise on research, fact-checks, and substance. No amount of wordsmithery can make up for that. The idea is to keep your reader engaged and not to flaunt your vocabulary. I've often asked myself, "Will a 12-year-old make sense of what I am writing?". It has helped me write more lucidly. For AV content, keep the tone conversational and easy.

If there's one piece of advice I could give, it would be to never assume. Dig into the demographics of each platform you're using. Different audiences have different tastes, different vocabularies. Even the way they consume information can vary. Before you put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard), picture your ideal reader or listener. What are their pain points? What keeps them awake at night? What lights their fire? Tailoring your story to the audience is half the battle. Let's say you're writing for a group of busy professionals. They want clear takeaways, actionable insights, get to the point. Conversely, a younger crowd might crave something more lighthearted, maybe with a touch of humor. Adapt your message accordingly.
