How can you write a memoir that is both engaging and professional?

Focus mainly on weaving a compelling narrative with vivid details and emotions. And maintain a polished writing style, ensuring clarity and coherence throughout the memoir for a sophisticated and enjoyable reading experience.

Because memoirs tend to recount events from our lives, some people tend to get them mixed up with autobiographies or life-stories. But really, it's not about your story. Instead of thinking about your story, try thinking about what the reader is going to learn from your story, and focus on that as the main theme. There might be some side lessons in there, but this way you can pick and choose the events from your life that support the theme you've chosen and create a really engaging and focused book.

Find your niche. The narrower, the better. Always try to choose an area that is underrepresented or ignored. Presume nothing when creating this. Give the audience everything you have to share. Don’t edit yourself.

Do it before you die! Show, don't tell. Ground it in place and in time, contextualised. Be modest. Tell people your biggest mistakes as well as your biggest Eurekae.

1. Choose a theme: Your memoir isn't just a collection of random anecdotes. It should have a central theme or thread that ties everything together. What is the main message you want to convey? Is it about overcoming adversity, achieving a goal, or learning a valuable life lesson? Identifying your theme will help you focus your writing and keep it from meandering.

They say nothing great comes from your comfort zone, but they are not writers. The best writing I've ever read has been when the author is so deep in their comfort zone that theirs is the only voice they hear. Dig deep and find your voice and write using the words you would normally use. Think of it like you're talking to your best friend.

2. Find your voice: This is your story, so tell it in your own unique way. Don't try to imitate someone else's style. Be honest, authentic, and let your personality shine through. Use humor, wit, or whatever feels natural to you. Your voice is what will make your memoir stand out and resonate with readers.

Sit with the discomfort. Writing authentically is about digging deep into your “feels” and those feels aren’t meant to be comfortable and packaged for an audience or you. Just get raw, use the writing to bleed and heal, bleed and heal. I cannot tell you how many times I stopped entirely for days, then wrote all hours. It was a process that stripped me of my ego. Use cliches! Why not?! Don’t use them, twist and turn them and make them your own! My god man, are we telling people to tell their story?! Or to tell a story to please others! The memoir is for you first, so yes, use the senses to add ‘color’ but don’t obsess over how others perceive it. There will come a time to edit and shape. Yet, at first write, pillage the paper with your passion. From the depths of your somatic expression, let it reveal how you experience the world with words.

Every incident from your life need not make it to the memoir. You can pick the parts you want to share with the world and polish them enough that they sparkle. What to share and what to not, without making it look incomplete is an art. One can master this art simply by using the rule of five senses while writing.

Choosing a theme or a lesson to focus on is a great way to start a memoir because then you can pick and choose which events from your life need to be included. If they support the theme, great throw them in. If they don't, maybe set that memory aside for your next book. Remember, readers care about what they're going to learn from your book: they want to get in, find their answer, and figure out how to apply it right away. They don't want to listen to Chunk from The Goonies recount every painful day from his 5th grade class.

Be selective and organized: Your memoir doesn't have to be a chronological retelling of your entire life. Choose the most impactful and interesting moments to share, and organize them in a way that flows naturally. Use transitions, flashbacks, or even different narrative styles to keep things engaging. Remember, you're crafting a story, not writing a diary entry.

Readers are smarter than you think; they can pick up on the nuances of your writing.

Show and tell, if you like. Express your fears as your walked alone through the cold dead of night on the empty streets under the city lights. 😏 Let the audience come with you and name the thing, the pain, the tragedy and so on.

I often say: there's no such thing as a well-written book. Everything is well-edited. I am a big fan of spitting out the draft as fast as you can using the words in your head, and then taking your time when it comes to editing to make sure you've done your story justice. Make sure the reader doesn't get lost anywhere, that all themes and plots tie up nicely, and that the arc is complete. Then go in and make sure it's error-free.

The editing process is perhaps just as important as the writing of the book itself. But while the book is a result of pouring yourself into each page, effective editing will often be dispassionate, even clinical. It must also be done from the perspective of a reader, and any emotional connection to certain passages, sections, and so on, is secondary. As long as the edits stay true to your TOV and initial vision, remember brevity is the soul of wit. When it comes to proofreading, remove every single ellipsis (...). A period or comma works just as well without making your writing feel like a rough draft of a text message. That would be my first step, before moving onto the rest.

Write from the heart, we don't say this enough. Working out the technicalities of the genre come later. First is to let your thoughts flow on paper in the most honest way. From time to time, reassess your words against the message you are trying to get through and always be authentic.

Edit and proofread: Even the best memoirs need polishing. Take the time to revise, edit, and proofread your work ruthlessly. Get feedback from trusted friends or beta readers. Look for awkward phrasing, typos, and inconsistencies. Remember, a professional memoir requires professional presentation.

A common trap is to try and edit as you write your first draft. Resist this impulse as it could slow you down, create doubt, and possibly discourage you from even finishing. Get a draft out using the unfiltered words and ideas in your head, take a break to collect your thoughts, then come back and edit. There's actually something to revise now if you follow the writing process.

Personal essays can be a good starting point to explore a memoir. Personal essays can give ideas to explore important topics that matter to you and over time those can become either chapters in the memoir or provide direction to the memoir. Diving straight into a big project like a memoir can be daunting. Personal essays are more manageable at the start and also shorter in length which can build the mental and technical stamina needed to finish a memoir.

To write an engaging and professional memoir, blend personal storytelling with polished writing. Capture emotions authentically, use vivid details, and maintain a coherent structure. Even humour can make your memoir more enjoyable to read. Additionally, to ensure professionalism, ensure your memoir is well-edited for clarity and coherence.
